COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team fell, 2-0, against Akron Wednesday on Senior Night at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the home loss, the Buckeyes fall to 5-11-1 overall, while the Zips improve to 8-5-2 in 2016.
“Akron is an explosive team with very good athletes and a lot of pace,” head coach John Bluem said. “We weren’t as sharp as we need to be in the beginning of the game. We conceded a couple bad goals early on and it put us in a hole against a team that you are probably not going to get out of. At halftime, we just asked the guys on Senior Night to give their best effort and continue to battle. This team has done that all year.”
AKRON STRIKES EARLY
The Zips struck the board in the fifth minute when a deflected ball in the box went to Johnathan Lewis, who found the back of the net from 12 yards out at 4:52. The ball was played into Nick Hinds on a cross from the far side and his pass was deflected before it found the foot of Lewis for the Akron score.
ZIPS PUSH THEIR LEAD
Akron extended its lead to two goals in the 24th minute. A through ball by Brad Ruhaak from midfield played to Hinds from the right wing and he finished from six yards out at 23:08.
SIEGFRIED DENIES THE PK
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Parker Siegfried came up big for the Buckeyes right before halftime. The Zips were given a penalty kick when Manuel Cordeiro was taken down inside the box. However, the low strike on the penalty attempt by Adam Najem was denied by a diving Siegfried at 44:35. It marked the second time this fall that Siegfried made a penalty kick save at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
