COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State baseball team belted 12 hits on six runs to defeat Morehead State, 6-3, Tuesday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the victory, the Buckeyes improve to 27-10 overall, while the Eagles fall to 25-15.
“Our bullpen pitched very well tonight,” head coach Greg Beals said. We had guys step up tonight too at the plate. Jalen Washington had his first career start today and went 2-for-3 with some good defensive plays too. It’s great to have guys like that on this team and he was ready to go. We kept the momentum going and we need to continue to that tomorrow.”
It was a great night for the Ohio State baseball program as OSU pitcher Zach Farmer threw out the honorary first pitch on Be The Match Night at Bill Davis Stadium. Fans could sign up to be a registered marrow donor at the front gate of the ballpark.
“That was pretty cool to see,” Beals said. “For a kid that isn’t 100 percent, he still threw a strike tonight. He’s a guy that we care a lot about and to see him with the guys smiling in the dugout, it’s something special. He was excited to get out there and he means a lot to this team.”
With the help of Be The Match Organization, Farmer has been cancer free for 10 months after winning his fight with acute myeloid leukemia at the James Cancer Hospital on campus in Columbus. After undergoing chemotherapy to fight the disease, Farmer was able to find a bone marrow match through the bone marrow registry and had his transplant last August. Former Buckeye captain Tim Wetzel caught Farmer’s first pitch, which of course, was a strike across the outer half of home plate.
Morehead State came into contest leading the nation in several offensive categories, but was limited to six hits vs. the OSU pitching staff. The Eagles were hitless in their final four at-bats.
Morehead State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Buckeyes answered with a run in the bottom half when Ryan Leffel post a RBI groundout to score Troy Montgomery. The Eagles scored a third run in the top of the second vs. Niemeyer, but the Scarlet and Gray knotted the score at 3-all, plating two runs in the bottom half vs. Morehead State starter Aaron Leasher.
In his first start of the year, Jalen Washington slapped a one-out single through the left side as Jordan McDonough touched home plate on the hit. A two-out single by Connor Sabanosh made it 3-3.
The Buckeyes got the breakaway run in the bottom of the fourth when Sabanosh sent his ninth double of the season to right center to push Washington around the dish.
After a shaky start, Ohio State starting pitcher Adam Niemeyer settled down and stranded two runners in the top of the third after Sabanosh made a fantastic catch in front of the netting behind home plate. He was relieved by left Michael Horejsei with two down in the top of the fourth.
The Scarlet and Gray tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth vs. reliever Blake Smith. Montgomery plated Washington when he connected on a 2-1 pitch for his team-best fifth triple of the season. Pat Porter pulled a liner to right to make it 6-4.
In a no decision Niemeyer threw 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Horejsei tossed the next two frames and did not allow a hit or run with a career-high three strikeouts to pick up his first collegiate win. Kyle Michalik threw one pitch and got an out to end the top of the seventh. Michalik finished the day with 1.1 innings pitched on no hits or hits. Trace Dempsey picked up his sixth save of the year, striking out the side in the ninth.
