COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team finished its 11-game homestand with a 9-4 win over Akron Wednesday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes conclude the home stretch with a 9-2 mark and improve to 16-6 overall in 2015.
“It was great for our offense to get several extra-base hits and stolen bases tonight,” head coach Greg Beals said. “It wasn’t an easy day to pitch with the wind blowing the way it was and Havird did a good job of getting us five innings before Kinker came in and really did a nice job out of the bullpen tonight. We need to continue this momentum this weekend at Rutgers.”
The Akron bats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on four hits vs. Ohio State starter John Havird. But the Buckeyes evened the score at 2-2 quickly after RBI doubles by Nick Sergakis and Zach Ratcliff in the bottom half of the second against Akron starter Josh Lapiano.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when the Buckeyes jumped out to an 8-2 lead after a five-hit, six-run fifth inning. With the bases loaded Connor Sabanosh sent a sac fly to center field to give Ohio State the 3-2 lead. Pat Porter then doubled to left center to plate Troy Montgomery and Ratcliff. An RBI single by Kuhn scored Porter from third base before Ronnie Dawson crushed a two-run home run deep over the wall in right center to make it 8-2.
After the Zips plated a run in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, Porter launched his fourth home run of the year with a solo shot over the right field wall to make it 9-4.
Havird improves to 3-0 in 2015, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Seth Kinker relieved him and threw 1.1 innings on two hits, one run with two strikeouts. Michael Horejsei pitched a scoreless eighth with a strikeout, while Adam Niemeyer tossed a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.
The Buckeyes will next head for a three-game series at Rutgers Friday-Sunday at Bainton Field in Piscataway, N.J.
