AUBURN, Ala.–Anna Kirk and Maddy McIntyre both hit three-run home runs and Olivia O’Reilly gave up just three hits in a five-inning shutout for Ohio State in a 10-0 win over Samford on Saturday evening at Jane B. Moore Field on the campus of Auburn University. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 11-4 on the year while Samford falls to 13-4.
Ohio State wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard first, as a pair of walks to Keelia Nester and Caitlin Conrad set the stage for Anna Kirk, who belted a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left center field. For Kirk, it was her third long ball of the season and RBI number 11, 12 and 13. The Buckeyes’ fourth run came on a wild pitch by Samford pitcher Rebecca Leonard and the fifth via a throwing error by catcher Hannah Taylor on a stolen base from Alex Bayne, allowing Cammi Prantl to score from third.
Not satisfied, the Buckeye offense put up a four-spot in the top of the second, highlighted by Maddy McIntyre’s second home run of the weekend, a three-run blast to left field. The first two batters of the inning – Nester and Conrad – walked, prompting a pitching change for Samford. The next batter, Taylor White, sacrificed Nester and Conrad up a base, and a fielding error by Samford first baseman Karsin Spinks allowed Nester to score, setting the stage for McIntyre’s home run.
In the third, Ohio State tacked on another run via a sacrifice fly from Kirk, who drove in her career-high fourth run of the game. That was all the offense that O’Reilly would need, as she allowed just three hits on the night and registered her second shutout of the weekend.
At the plate, Kirk and McIntyre combined for seven RBI, going 2-for-4 and adding two runs scored. Nester stole a career-high four bases and as a team, the Buckeyes swiped seven bags.
Ohio State closes out play at Auburn tomorrow when it takes on SIU-Edwardsville at 11:30 a.m. CST (12:30 p.m. EST).
