COLUMBUS, Ohio – Maddy Humphrey, Peanut Johnson and Emma Royce took care of the offense. Liz Tamburro and a backline of Royce, Carolina Vergroesen, Hannah Pany and Caroline Rath handled the defense. The result was a 3-0 win for Ohio State over Rutgers on Friday afternoon in Columbus. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 7-4 overall, 3-1 in the Big Ten while Rutgers in 6-6, 0-5.
Humphrey kept a goal-scoring streak alive and now has at least one tally in all eight games that she’s played in. Royce converted a second-half penalty stroke and Johnson added an insurance goal in the 59th minute to cap the win. In front of the cage, Tamburro made seven stops and stymied a Rutgers offense that came into the contest averaging over 21 shots and nearly three goals per game.
At the 10:33 mark of the first half, Humphrey and freshman Casey Cole played a perfect give-and-go game that resulted in a diving goal by Humphrey from approximately five yards out. A sophomore, it was Humphrey’s 50th and 51st career points. Cole also now has at least one point in three straight contests.
The score would stay 1-0 for the remainder of the first half, as both teams took five shots in the first half and had one corner. In the 45th minute, Johnson created an opportunity in front of the goal, but was dragged down and a penalty stroke was called. Royce made Rutgers pay for the miscue, converting her fourth tally of the year.
Ohio State’s defense continued to thwart any serious Scarlet Knight scoring opportunity, but when Rutgers did get into the offensive zone, Tamburro was up to the challenge. Three of her six saves came in the second half, including two from close range at the end of a RU penalty corner.
Johnson completed the Buckeyes’ offensive day when she took a cross from Royce in the circle and sent a shot past RU goalkeeper Shevaun Hayes into the lower right of the cage. It was Johnson’s seventh goal of the year and gives her 81 points on her career (31 goals, 19 assists).
Rutgers’ Nicole Imbriaco, one of the conference’s top goal-scoring threats (she came into the game with 11 goals on the season) was held in check and only managed one shot. For Tamburro and the Ohio State defense, it was their third shutout of the season.
Ohio State finished with a 14-11 edge in shots while Rutgers had three penalty corner to the Buckeyes’ two. Royce stuffed the stat sheet on both offense and defense with one goal, one assist and one defensive save.
Winners of six of their last eight games, Ohio State returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 11 when it continues its four-game homestand by hosting No. 11 Louisville at 1 p.m.
