COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three weeks left before the 2015 season opener against George Mason in Port Charlotte, Fla., the Ohio State baseball team got to work inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center with its first team practice Friday evening.
“There is obviously some added excitement with the first team practice today, but the preparation for the season has already begun,” head coach Greg Beals said. “The depth and competition of our 35 guys has been a big part of the preparation we’ve done. We have high expectations for this team and we need to continue to work hard every day.”
The 2015 Buckeyes return 21 letterwinners from a season ago, including seven starting position players and 13 pitchers. Big Ten Freshman of Year pitcher Tanner Tully is back along with the team’s Top 3 hitters, Ronnie Dawson (.337 avg., 10 2B, 4 HR), Nick Sergakis (.318 avg., 6 2B) and Troy Kuhn (.290, 14 2B, 6 HR).
A couple more notes on the 2015 Buckeyes:
• Aaron Gretz and Connor Sabanosh have been named captains of the 2015 Ohio State baseball team. • Ohio State returns position players that accounted for 82 percent of the Buckeye starts and pitchers that tossed more than 67 percent of the innings last season will be back on the mound for Ohio State in 2015. • The Buckeyes will play 29 home games at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium in 2015. Ohio State takes on 15 NCAA Tournament Teams from last season.
The team will travel to Port Charlotte, Fla, twice, within the next four weeks. The Buckeyes will travel south for practice Feb. 6-8 before returning to Florida for three games at the Snowbird Classic Feb. 13-15 to open the 2015 campaign.
