COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michigan’s Ainsley McCallister scored off a tip it with 1:33 remaining in regulation to give No. 14 Michigan a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ohio State on Sunday afternoon in field hockey action at Buckeye Varsity Field. With the loss, Ohio State is 6-11 overall and 1-7 in Big Ten play while the Wolverines improve to 12-6, 6-2.
Despite the loss, junior Peanut Johnson scored her eighth goal of the year, tying the score in the 51st minute when she converted on a rebound off a shot from Maddy Humphrey that was saved by Michigan goalie Sam Swenson. Johnson is second on the team in goals (eight) points (27) and first in assists (11). Additionally, it was Ohio State’s fourth one-goal loss against a ranked opponent.
A season-best crowed of 406 watched a defensive-oriented first half, as the two teams combined for just three shots. Michigan was able to break through in the 41st minute as McCallister scored the first of her two goals on the day. Jamie Dean collected the ball after a scramble in front of the goal, fed McCallister and she poked it past Ohio State’s Liz Tamburro.
Just 10 minutes later, Johnson had the equalizer to tie the game at 1-1. It was set up by a point-blank shot from Humphrey. The ball was saved, but came off Swenson’s pads and directly to Johnson, who was waiting just three yards out from the goal. She put the ball into the lower right corner of the cage.
The Wolverines’ game-winning goal came as Ohio State was defending a penalty corner. Leslie Smith sent the original shot towards the cage, and McCallister was waiting in the right place at the right time to tip it in.
Overall, the two teams combined for just 15 shots (Michigan 10, Ohio State 5). Swenson made three saves while Tamburro stopped two shots. The Wolverines also held a 5-3 edge in penalty corners. Prior to the game, Ohio State honored its four seniors – Sarah Lemieux, Alexis Allen, Carly Mackessy and Kaitlyn Wagner.
The Buckeyes will be the eight seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, held Nov. 6-9 in Ann Arbor, Mich., and take on top-seeded Maryland in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
