COLUMBUS, Ohio – Maryland’s Sarah Sprink, the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year, scored twice in the first half as the Terripans earned a 5-0 victory over Ohio State in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. Top-seeded Maryland (17-2) moves on to face the winter of the Penn State/Michigan State quarterfinal while Ohio State finishes its season at 6-12 overall.
After playing the Terps toe-to-toe for the first 17 minutes of regulation, Sprink broke through the first over her two goals on a penalty corner at the 17:02 mark. Eight minutes later, Ohio State successfully defended a corner but Maryland was awarded a penalty stroke and Sprink converted to make the score 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 though halftime, but a three-goal rally over a six-minute period early in the second half put the game out of reach. Carrie Hanks started it when she tipped in a crossing pass from Moria Putsch in the 42nd minute. Less than five minutes later, Anna Dessoye tipped in a shot from outside the circle to make it 4-0, and the fifth goal was scored by Katie Gerzabek at the 47:21 mark.
Maryland, the top offense in the Big Ten, outshot Ohio State 22-7 and held a 8-3 advantage in penalty corners. Buckeye freshman goalie Liz Tamburro finished with four saves to give her 116 on the season (6.44 per game).
Statistically, freshman Maddy Humphrey finished as the Buckeyes’ leading scorer with 32 points (12 goals, eight assists). Peanut Johnson, a member of the All-Big Ten second team, had a career-high 11 assists to go along with eight goals.
Thursday’s game marked the 11th this year against a ranked opponent. Ohio State also played six games against teams currently ranked in the top 10.
