Wetzel will graduate this December with a degree in nutrition and plans to go to medical school next August. “Tim Wetzel’s receipt of a prestigious NCAA post-graduate scholarship is a fitting tribute to one of our most accomplished scholar-athletes,” noted Professor John P. Bruno, the University’s faculty athletics representative. “Tim’s academic success reflects his hard work and dedication as well as the support that he has received from his coaches and academic advisors.” Wetzel, a native of Mayfield, Ohio, was a four-year starter for the Buckeyes. The OSU outfielder collected 204 career starts, tallying 21 doubles, four triples and five home runs. “Tim was the definition of a student-athlete,” head coach Greg Beals said. “He was a great competitor on the field and in the classroom. Tim also was a great teammate and named captain by his peers for his senior year. We are very excited that Tim has won this prestigious scholarship and know he worked very hard to earn it.” The three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection scored 103 runs and drove in 84 to go along with 30 stolen bases. Wetzel is just one of 10 Ohio State student-athletes to receive the scholarship since 2000. “I want to thank SASSO for their help in making my undergraduate experience go very smoothly,” Wetzel said. “I am very grateful for this opportunity. I have always been interested in medicine and pursuing a career in the field and it’s been great to be at a university that has the Wexner Medical Center, which has made my desire in the field grow over the last few years. I’m excited with what the future will bring.” To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in his or her final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution’s faculty athletics representative. Created in 1964, NCAA postgraduate scholarships promote and encourage education by rewarding the Association’s most accomplished student-athletes.
