COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team fell to Austin Peay, 7-2, in 10 innings Saturday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes drop to 9-7 on the season while Austin Peay improves to 10-8.
The Governors plated five runs on four hits and a Buckeye error in the top of the 10th inning to even the series at a game apiece.
Both pitchers combined to allow just two hits over the first four innings but Austin Peay took the lead in the top of the fifth with one off Ohio State starter Brian King. Rolando Gautier doubled down the left field line with one down, stole third and, after King struck out Tyler Childress looking for the second out, Cody Hudson dribbled an RBI single up the middle for the 1-0 lead.
However, Ohio State answered right back when Brad Hutton led off the bottom of the fifth with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center, to tie the game.
The Buckeyes then plated one to take the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Cypret singled to center with two down, advanced to second on a walk by Josh Dezse and scored on a two-out RBI single to right by Brad Hallberg.
Austin Peay was able to answer right back to tie it with a run in the top of the seventh when Reed Harper doubled with one down and came around to score on a two-out infield single by pinch-hitter Matt Wollenzin.
Things stayed quiet until the bottom of the ninth when Kirby Pellant doubled to right-center with two down and Tim Wetzel was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second but Greg Solomon struck out swinging to end the Ohio State threat and send the Buckeyes to their third consecutive extra-inning contest.
Hallberg had a pair of hits for the Buckeyes while King allowed just one earned run over a career-high 6.2 innings while striking out a career-best five.
Mike Hebert picked up the win for the Governors with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Buckeyes and Governors play the rubber game of the three-game set at 1:05 p.m. Sunday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
