COLUMBUS, Ohio On a hazy, somewhat gloomy Wednesday night at Bill Davis Stadium, Ohio State defeated Marshall, 8-1, in a rain-shortened, five-inning game.
After a 22-minute rain delay in between the top and bottom of the second inning, Ohio State jumped on Thundering Herd starter Ian Kadish for four runs off five hits. The Buckeyes hit three doubles in the inning by Ryan Dew, Brian DeLucia and Tyler Engle and Tony Kennedy had a two-run single.
Marshall’s Ben Jurevicius sped around the base paths for a one-out triple in the third. He scored on a sacrifice fly to trim the lead to 4-1.
DeLucia greeted new Marshall pitcher Andrew Hancock with his second double of the game to lead off the fourth. One out later Engle stroked his second double of the game, down the right field line, to score DeLucia to make the score 5-1.
Alex Wimmers relieved Ohio State starter Andrew Armstrong in the rain in the fifth inning. Armstrong pitched well, allowing just one run while scattering three hits, walking one and striking out one. He picked up the win to improve to 4-3.
Justin Miller blasted his second home run of the season and the team’s 15th to left field to lead off the fifth inning, extending the lead to 6-1. After Chris Macke walked, Cory Rupert homered to right, his first homer of the season, to give Ohio State an 8-1 lead. Minutes later, officials called the game.
Game Notes:
- The win was the 950th in coach Bob Todd’s 25-year career.
- Marshall freshman right fielder Ben Jurevicius displayed smooth athleticism, hitting a third inning triple and making a difficult catch in right look easy. He’s the cousin of current Cleveland Brown Joe Jurevicius.
- Ohio State hosts Illinois in a four-game Big Ten Series this weekend at Bill Davis Stadium. Prior to the start of the 6:35 p.m. game Friday, coach Bob Todd will be honored for his upcoming induction into the American Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. In between doubleheader games Saturday, Marty Karow’s jersey No. 13 will be retired. Sunday before the start of the 1:05 p.m. finale, seniors Dan DeLucia, Tony Kennedy, Chris Macke and Rory Meister will be honored.
