Baseball: Buckeyes Come from 11 Down to Stun Buffalo – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio Buffalo put nine runs on the board in the fourth inning to build an 11-0 lead, but Ohio State scored nine runs over the final three innings to beat the Bulls, 14-13, Tuesday at Bill Davis Stadium. A huge crowd of 3,503 fans, most of them Columbus City School (CCS) sixth graders, were on hand for the fourth annual CCS Baseball Day.
Buffalo, which did not have a baseball program between 1987 and 1999, made its first visit to Bill Davis Stadium. The loss dropped the Bulls’ record to 13-36. Ohio State improved to 28-22. With the win, Ohio State matched its longest winning streak of the season at three.
The Buckeyes started to mount their comeback in the fourth when Ryan Dew hit a two-run home run to right center. J.B. Shuck had a two-run triple in the fifth that cut the deficit to 13-5.
Two more runs in the seventh brought the home team to within 13-7. Justin Miller crushed a three-run home run in the eighth that brought the team to within 13-10. It was Miller’s third home run this season, which ties him with Dew and Tony Kennedy for the team lead.
The Buckeyes completed the comeback in the ninth. Cory Rupert led off with a double and was followed by three straight walks. Miller then singled home Macke and Cory Kovanda to tie the game. Zach Hurley then hit with a long drive that was dropped by the center fielder, which brought home Shuck for the game-winning run.
Eric Best pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the victory, improving to 4-1. Shivan Bhan suffered the loss, falling to 0-1. Miller led the Buckeyes with three hits and five RBI. Shuck and Kovanda each scored four runs for Ohio State.
Game Notes:
- Big Ten Player of the Week Justin Miller extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a seventh inning single. Miller is batting .488 (20-for-41) during the streak with two home runs and 20 RBI.
- Miller tied a season high and career high with five RBI and now has 15 RBI in his last five games.
- Nine different Buckeyes accounted for the team’s 12-hit day vs. Buffalo. Eight different Buckeyes scored a run.
- Shuck and Kovanda each scored four runs, which are season and career highs for both players.
- With the win, Ohio State concludes the home portion of its schedule with a 14-10 record. The Buckeyes have a 211-96 (.687) all-time record at Bill Davis Stadium.
- Today’s attendance of 3,503 fans boosted the season total attendance to 35,405.
- Ohio State leaves Wednesday for Iowa City and a four game series Thursday through Saturday with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
