COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State fell to Western Carolina, 12-2, Wednesday in the second game of a two-game, non-conference series at Bill Davis Stadium. The Catamounts won Tuesday’s game, 7-3.
The Buckeyes are 28-17 on the year, while Western Carolina improved to 34-15. Ohio State travels to Minnesota Friday-Sunday for a crucial four-game Big Ten series. Game one begins at 7:35 p.m. ET Friday and can be heard on AM 920 WMNI.
Western Carolina picked up where it left off Tuesday night, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Catamounts extended their lead to 6-0 with five runs in the top of the second, with the big hit being a three-run home run by Kenny Smith. Another three-run home run in the top of the fourth sparked a four-run inning to make it 10-0.
Ohio State got on the board with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) led off the inning with a triple to right center and scored on a Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) RBI single.
The Buckeyes made it 10-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) led of with a single and eventually scored on an Angle RBI single.
WCU added another home run in the top of the ninth, a two-run shot to make it 12-2.
Freshman Josh Edgin (Three Springs, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) started on the mound for the Buckeyes and struggled, lasting just 1.2 innings, giving up six earned runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out two. Redshirt freshman Taylor Barnes (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) went the next 4.1 innings for OSU, making just his second career appearance. He allowed four earned runs on five hits, striking out two and walking none. Trey Fausnaugh (Sr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) pitched a perfect seventh and Jake Hale (So., Albany, Ohio/Alexander) went the final two innings for the Buckeyes, giving up WCU’s third home run of the game. Tyler Johnson picked up the win, improving to 2-3 on the year. He went five innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits, walking one. Bryan Corbett and Daniel Ottone each pitched two scoreless innings.
Ohio State had 10 hits in the game and Western Carolina 12. Angle and Zoeller each went 3-for-4 in the game.
