MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Ohio State offense erupted for a season-high 22 hits in a 13-1 win over Minnesota Saturday in the third game of a four-game Big Ten series at Siebert Field in Minneapolis. The Buckeyes won both games Saturday, winning game one, 8-1, and outscoring the Gophers 21-2 on the day.
Ohio State improved to 30-18 overall and 14-11 in Big Ten action, while Minnesota fell to 34-12 overall and 15-7 in the conference. The Buckeyes and Gophers wrap up the four-game series at 2:05 p.m. ET Sunday.
J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) picked up in game two Saturday where Jake Hale (So., Albany, Ohio/Alexander) left off in game one. Shuck went six solid innings to improve to 4-2 on the year, giving up one earned run on just three hits. He walked four and struck out five. Hale pitched a six-hit complete game in game one.
The Ohio State offense jumped on the Gophers often and early, putting up two runs in the first and second and then exploding for seven runs in the third for an 11-0 lead.
Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) had an RBI single and Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) hit his team leading ninth home run in the first to make it 2-0.
Fryer had an RBI double and Zoeller a sacrifice fly in the second to put OSU up 4-0.
In the seven-run third, the Buckeyes had six hits and sent 12 batters to the plate. Cory Kovanda (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), Fryer, Zoeller, Chris Macke (Jr., Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) and Brian DeLucia (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) all had RBI, with Michael Arp (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) driving in two runs in the inning.
Fryer knocked in his fourth run of the game in the fourth with an RBI single to put OSU up 12-1 after Minnesota scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third.
The Buckeyes added run No. 13 in the sixth on a Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) grounder to short.
Eleven Buckeyes had hits in the game, including four with three hits, Kovanda, Fryer, Miller and DeLucia. Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling), Ryan Dew (Fr., Croton, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) and Macke had two hits each. Zoeller had three RBI in the game.
Marcus McKenzie took the loss for Minnesota, his first of the year, giving up seven earned runs in two innings. He allowed 10 hits, walked two and struck out one, falling to 7-1 on the year. The Gophers used three pitchers in the game.
Theron Minium (Fr., New Cumberland, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) pitched a scoreless seventh for the Buckeyes.
