COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State wrapped up a four-game series sweep of Indiana with an 11-3 win Sunday at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes won game one Friday, 6-4, and both games Saturday, 4-3 and 9-8.
The win improves OSU to 23-10 overall and 8-6 in the Big Ten. Indiana dropped to 14-22 and 4-12 in conference play. The four-game Big Ten sweep was OSU’s first since May 7-9, 2005 at Penn State. It was the first four-game Big Ten sweep at home since May 9-11, 2003 vs. Michigan State. The Buckeyes last took four from Indiana April 30-May 2, 2004 in Bloomington, Ind.
The Buckeyes wrap up an 11-game homestand at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday vs. Xavier at Bill Davis Stadium.
Indiana took the lead with a run in the top of the first but the Buckeyes stormed back in the bottom of the first by sending 12 batters to the plate to take an 8-1 lead after one.
Jacob Howell (Sr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) started off the home half of the first by getting hit by a pitch. Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) followed with a single and Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) walk to load the bases. Zach Hurley (Fr., Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) then hit a sharp grounder up the middle that hit off the leg of Indiana’s pitcher and the Hoosiers were able to force out Howell at home leaving the bases loaded with one out. Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) put OSU on the board with a bases-clearing double to make it 3-1. A wild pitch by IU starter Doug Fleenor moved Miller to third and he scored on a Ryan Dew (Fr., Croton, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) ground out to second for a 4-1 advantage. Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) kept the inning alive by reaching on an error by the second baseman and Jason Zoeller (Sr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Acedemy) followed with his fifth home run of the season for a 6-1 lead. Cory Kovanda (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), the ninth batter of the inning, doubled to right center and OSU then hit its second home run of the inning when Howell homered over the right field wall for the seventh and eighth runs of the inning. Angle added his second hit of the inning, a double, but was left stranded at second to end the inning. The Buckeyes stretched the lead to 10-1 with two runs in the bottom of the second. Kennedy had a sacrifice fly in the inning and Zoeller an RBI single. OSU added one more run in the bottom of the sixth on a Kennedy RBI single for an 11-1 advantage. Indiana got two runs in the ninth for an 11-3 final.
J.B. Shuck (So., Galion, Ohio/Galion) made his seventh start of the season and went eight strong innings, giving up one earned run and scattering nine hits for the win. He improved to 2-1 on the year and tied his career high with eight strikeouts, while walking one. Eric Best (Fr., Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) pitched the ninth for OSU.
Fleenor was the losing pitcher for Indiana, as he lasted just 0.2 innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on six hits. His record fell 1-4. Billy Kitchen, Eric Arnett, Jarrett Casey and Chris Squires also saw action on the mound for IU.
Ohio State and Indiana each had 13 hits in the game. Miller was 3-for-3 with a walk in the game, while Angle, Zoeller and Kovanda each had two hits. Miller and Zoeller had three RBI and Howell and Kennedy each knocked in two.
