COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team lost to Michigan, 13-3, Sunday in the final game of a four-game Big Ten series at Bill Davis Stadium.
Ohio State is 18-9 overall and 4-6 in Big Ten action, while Michigan is 22-6 overall and 8-0 in the conference. Michigan won all four games of the series.
The Buckeyes play a home non-conference doubleheader vs. Ball State Wednesday starting at 3:05 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium before playing host to Indiana Friday-Sunday in a four-game Big Ten series at Bill Davis Stadium.
The Michigan offense continued to produce as it jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game four with two runs in the first, two in the third and two in the fourth.
The Buckeyes cut the Wolverines lead to 6-3 with a three run fourth. Matt Angle (Jr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) reached on an error to start the inning and Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) and J.B. Shuck (Galion, Ohio/Galion) followed with singles. Shuck’s infield hit scored Angle. Fryer scored the second OSU run after an error by the Michigan shortstop and Shuck scored after Ryan Dew (Fr., Croton, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) grounded into a double play.
That was as close as OSU would get, with Michigan scoring six more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 13-3 advantage.
The Buckeye pitching staff struggled all game, walking 12 batters and surrendering 16 hits. Rory Meister (Jr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) started his first career game after 65 relief appearances and went three innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits. The right-hander walked four and is now 2-2 on the year. Ohio State used five total pitchers in the game, with Theron Minium (Fr., New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) going an inning, Darren Sizemore (So., Hamilton, Ohio/Ross/Georgetown University) a third of an inning, Jake Hale (So., Albany, Ohio/Alexander) 2.2 innings and Josh Edgin (Fr., Three Springs, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) two innings.
Chris Fetter earned the win for Michigan to improve to 4-1 on the year. He went seven innings, giving up three runs, none earned, while surrendering just four hits. He struck out three and walked none. Ben Jenzen and Sam Yashinsky made relief appearances for Michigan as OSU tallied just five hits in the game.
Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) went 0-for-3 in the game, snapping his 16 game hitting streak.
