COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Michigan Sunday in the third game of a four-game Big Ten series at Bill Davis Stadium.
The Buckeyes and Wolverines will play the final nine-inning game of the series Sunday afternoon. Michigan has won the first three games of the series. Ohio State is 18-8 overall and 4-5 in Big Ten action, while Michigan is 21-6 overall and 7-0 in the conference.
Game three, a seven-inning affair, started out as a pitchers duel, with Ohio State starter J.B. Shuck (Galion, Ohio/Galion) retiring the first seven batters of the game and Michigan’s starter Mike Wilson giving up just one hit through three innings.
The Buckeyes got on the board first with one run in the bottom of the fourth without the aid of a hit. Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) got hit by a pitch to start off the inning and reached second after Adam Schneider (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) sacrificed him to second and reached safely at first when Michigan attempted to force out Fryer at second. A wild pitch moved Fryer and Schneider to third and second, respectively. Fryer scored for OSU after a Michael Arp (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) grounder to second was booted.
The 1-0 OSU lead didn’t last long as Michigan put up four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. The key hit for the Wolverines was a 3-RBI triple by Nate Recknagel. Michigan added two more in the runs in the top of the sixth for a 6-1 advantage.
Ohio State threatened in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs to make it 6-3 and bringing the tying run to the plate, but Michael Powers retired two of the final three batters to earn the save.
Cory Kovanda (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and advanced to second when Jacob Howell (Sr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) was hit by a pitch. Kovanda and Howell advanced to third and second, respectively, on a ground out and Kovanda scored on a Ryan Dew (Croton, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) ground out to make it 6-2. Justin Miller (So., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) followed with an infield single to score Howell for a 6-3 deficit. The single by Miller extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
Shuck pitched 5.2 innings, giving up six runs, three earned. He gave up 10 hits and had three strike outs and two walks. Darren Sizemore (So., Hamilton, Ohio/Ross/Georgetown University) relieved Shuck and pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit. Shuck fell to 1-1 on the year.
Wilson earned the win for Michigan to improve to 5-0 on the year. He went 6.0 innings, giving up one run, none earned, while giving just two hits. He walked five and struck out four. Eric Katzman relieved Wilson in the seventh and only lasted 0.1 innings before being replaced by Powers.
The Buckeyes had three hits in the game and the Wolverines 10.
