The Ohio State baseball team rebounded from an early 5-1 deficit to defeat Northwestern, 11-6, in a non-conference game Thursday at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The Buckeyes are 6-0 on their spring break trip and have won 11 straight games and are 12-3 overall.
Ohio State head coach Bob Todd is just one win away from 900 all-time victories at 899-470-2. He is 775-388-2 at OSU. The Buckeyes will wrap up their seven-game spring break trip against Harvard Friday, March 23, at 1 p.m. at IMG (original game time was 11:30 a.m.). Ohio State’s home opener is Wednesday, March 28, vs. Toledo at 2 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium.
The Buckeyes fell behind early, giving up two runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third, and trailed 5-1 after three innings. The OSU run in the first came via an RBI double by catcher Eric Fryer (Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg).
Ohio State took the lead for good, 7-5, with a six-run bottom of the fifth. OSU capitalized on three Wildcat walks and an error in the inning, while sophomore Justin Miller (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) contributed a two-RBI double and Fryer a two-RBI single.
The Buckeyes stretched the lead to 11-5 with one run in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth. Miller led OSU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore J.B. Shuck (Galion, Ohio/Galion) extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI triple in the eighth. Fryer was 2-for-5 on the day with three RBI, while Tony Kennedy (Jr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) and Cory Kovanda (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) each had two hits.
Sophomore pitcher Josh Barrera (Somerset, Ohio/Sheridan) started the game for the Buckeyes and earned the win despite struggling at times. Barrera went 5.1 innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked three and struck out one while improving to 2-0 on the year.
Freshman Eric Best (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) relieved Barrera and threw a solid 2.2 innings, giving up just one hit, walking one and striking out five. Sophomore Jake Hale (Albany, Ohio/Alexander) pitched the ninth for OSU and gave up one run, on one hit and struck out two.
David Jensen was the losing pitcher for Northwestern, giving up six runs (five earned) in four innings. The Wildcats used three total pitchers. Ohio State had 12 hits in the game, Northwestern 9.
