Since his playing days at Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, Calif., Schneider has been an offensive threat and now as a junior, is one of the leaders for the Buckeyes. When he steps to the plate, he is determined, focused and willing to help the team any way possible. Schneider, a construction systems management major, is coming off a successful sophomore season and has made a few starts as a catcher, but has found his niche as a designated hitter against right-handed pitching. Last season, Schneider was the leading hitter off the bench with a .391 average and a .551 slugging percentage. Schneider, who made 18 starts in his 30 games last season with 11 doubles and 18 RBI, is ready for the 2006 Big Ten campaign, which gets under way this weekend in Iowa City, Iowa, to begin.
Was it a tough decision to leave your family in California to come to Ohio?
“Yes, it is very tough being away from my family. They are really supportive and wanted me to get the best education and baseball experience possible. It was a tough decision, but I am glad I made it.”
Has it been difficult to get use to the Ohio weather?
“Well, it started off tough, but now I am alright. I try not to complain about the weather too much. I am now in my third season so I am fine.”
What is the best thing about being a catcher?
“Having control and being able to control the tempo of the game. It is the only position on the field that can look out and see all the other positions. I like that I have to be a leader because there is a lot riding on a catcher’s shoulders.”
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
“All three catchers always go down to help out the pitchers before a game. Also, the whole team likes to get in line and do our own handshakes with each other.”
What phrase best describes your personality?
“My personality is best described as easy going; it’s just the way I am. On the field I am not quite as laid back and I am definitely more competitive.” Other than baseball, what are your hobbies and interests?
“I enjoy playing golf, though I play more when I go back to California. I also like music. I like playing guitar and hanging out with my roommates and friends.”
Are there any professional baseball players that you model your game after?
“I have been told I remind people of Paul Lo Duca, catcher for the New York Mets. We have the same body stature and we are both extremely competitive and fiery between the lines.”
What are your goals for your junior season?
“It would be nice to have the Big Ten tournament at home so my goals for the team are to win the Big Ten championship and, ultimately, win the College World Series. My personal goals are to be an everyday player. I want to be able to contribute to the team and help the younger guys as much as possible.”
What are your plans after baseball?
“I want to move back to California and get into the business side of construction. I think it would be great to maybe open my own construction business someday.”
