Baseball Pounds Out 22 Hits to Claim Game One vs. Lehigh, 17-10 – Ohio State Buckeyes

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Ohio State pounded out 22 hits for the second straight game on its way to a 17-10 victory over Lehigh Friday in the first game of a doubleheader at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium, the former spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Seven Buckeye starters had multiple hits to score three runs in the second, five in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Ohio State got things start in the second with three straight hits, including a lead-off double by J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion). He went to third on a single to left by Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) and scored when leftfielder David Moscow did not field the ball cleanly. A single by Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) put runners at first and second. A single by Jacob Howell (Jr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) loaded the bases. Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) was hit by a pitch for the second run before a sacrifice fly by Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) gave Ohio State a 3-0 lead.
Lehigh responded with three runs of its own to tie the game in the top of the third.
Ohio State built an 8-3 lead with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Schirtzinger drove in the go-ahead run with a single and Angle plated two more with a single to left-center field. Two more runners scored on a double to the left-field corner by Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South). Howell gave the Buckeyes a seven-run lead, 10-3, with a two-run single with two out in the bottom of the fourth. Shuck, who drew a walk to lead off the inning, and Schirtzinger, who beat out a bunt for a single, scored on Howell’s hit to left-center field.
Lehigh scored four times in the fifth inning to pull within a 10-7 score, thanks to a two-run home run by Matt McBride and a two-run single by Jeff Benfield. The Buckeyes got the run back though in the bottom of the inning when designated hitter Adam Schneider (Jr., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) singled to left to score Bourquin, who had his third hit – and second single – of the game.
The Buckeyes used five hits to score four runs in the sixth inning and build a 15-8 lead. Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) gave the Buckeyes runners at second and third after a double down the left-field line, his first hit of the game. Howell followed with a double to right to score both runs. A single by Angle scored Howell from second and then Schneider singled through the left side to score Angle as the fifth run of the inning.
Schirtzinger led the Buckeyes with four hits and scored five runs, while Howell and Stephen each had three hits. Angle, Schneider and Shuck each had two, while Fryer and Zoeller collected one hit to give every Buckeye starter a hit in the game. The Buckeyes had to overcome a season-high six errors.
Starter Cory Luebke (So., Maria Stein, Ohio/Marion Local) got the win for Ohio State. He pitched 5.2 innings and gave up eight runs, though only three were earned, on 11 hits to improve his record to 2-1. Kyle Collina (1-1) took the loss for Lehigh, which had 15 hits and two errors of its own.
Ohio State (3-4) and Lehigh (5-6) will play the second game of the doubleheader, a seven-inning game, Friday immediately after game one. The Buckeyes’ next game will be against Northern Iowa, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. followed with a game vs. Bethune-Cookman Sunday at 1 p.m.
