COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State leftfielder Steve Caravati batted in four runs leading the Buckeyes to an 8-1 victory over Bowling Green Wednesday night in front of 3,956 fans at Bill Davis Stadium.
Caravati opened the scoring in the bottom half of the third inning with a two-out single to score infielder Drew Anderson (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), who singled to right field then advanced to second after Jacob Howell (Fr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) walked. Caravati drove Anderson home as he smacked Bowling Green pitcher Tyler Smith’s 3-2 pitch through the left side.
Caravati collected his 27th and 28th RBI of the season two innings later as he belted his team-leading eighth home run to left-center field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Trey Fausnaugh (Fr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) came on to start the sixth, replacing starting pitcher Jeffrey Carroll (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), who left with a 3-0 lead in 5.0 innings of action. He allowed only one hit, a double by Josh Stewart in the second inning, with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Buckeyes scored another run in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to four runs. Paul Farinacci (Jr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) reached base with two outs after a throwing error on Falcon second baseman Eric Lawson, who threw past first base allowing Farinacci to reach second. Mike Rabin (Jr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) sent a single through the right side and Farinacci beat the throw to the plate. Bowling Green catcher Josh Stewart could not hang on to the ball. Rabin raced to second on the miscue and then was placed at third when the ball went into the dugout. The inning ended on a ground out by Kelly Houser (So., New Holland, Ohio/Adena). Fausnaugh made a spectacular defensive play in the top of the seventh inning to end the inning with the bases loaded of Falcons. On a ball off the glove of Farinacci at first base and fielded by Anderson at second, Fausnaugh sprinted to the first-base bag where he collided with pinch hitter Steve Raszka for the third out of the inning.
Anderson led off the bottom of the inning with a single through the right side and then stole bases 13 and 14 of the season to get to third before a sacrifice fly by Caravati gave the Buckeyes a 5-0 lead. It was his fourth RBI of the game.
Ohio State began the eighth inning with three straight hits to add three more runs. Pinch hitter Kris Moorman (Fr., St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry) connected for a single to left field to lead off the inning. Brett Garrard (Sr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) followed with a single to center field. Farinacci lanced a singled to left center to score Moorman, while Garrard advanced to third. After the first out of the inning, Cody Caughenbaugh (So., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) drew a pinch hit walk to load the bases for Anderson, who delivered two runs, Garrard and Farinacci, with a single up the middle.
The Falcons spoiled the Buckeye bid at their first shutout of the season, scoring one run without the benefit of a hit. After a fly out to start the inning, reliever Brett Hatcher (Jr., Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) walked the next three batters and then plunked Jimmy Lipari to make the score 8-1. Hatcher struck out the next batter and then got a fly out to end the game.
Caravati finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and added the sacrifice. Anderson was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Faraincci was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Rabin batted in the other run in a 1-for-4 effort.
Carroll improved to 2-2 on the season, while Tyler Johnson slipped to 4-2. Fausnaugh pitched 3.0 innings allowing one hit, a single by Jeff Warnock in the seventh inning. He walked one and had one strikeout. Hatcher pitched the final inning of the game, allowing the sole Falcon run of the game without a hit. He walked three and had one strikeout.
