COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore infielder Jedidiah Stephen singled down the right-field line with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to deliver the winning run as Ohio State defeated Michigan 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium. The win evened the series one game apiece with two games remaining in the series and put Ohio State back into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten as Northwestern was able to get past Minnesota in the first game of their doubleheader in Evanston.
Derek Kinnear (Sr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) reached on a fielding error on Michigan third baseman A.J. Scheidt before getting replaced by pinch runner Jesse Paciorek (Jr., Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood). Paciorek was picked off for the first out of the inning before Michigan starting pitcher Derek Feldkamp walked Drew Anderson (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg). A base hit through the right side by Jacob Howell (Fr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) moved Anderson to third before Feldkamp and the Wolverines intentionally walked Steve Caravati (Jr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) to load the bases.
Stephen got his only hit of the game to deliver Anderson as the winning run. Anderson finished 3-for-3, while Howell finished 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt. He was also hit by a pitch.
Michigan got its first hit of the game in the fourth inning, a lead-off infield single by Eric Rose and after a balk and a wild pitch by OSU starter Trent Luyster (Jr., Flushing, Ohio/Harrison Central), he scored on a double to left-center field by Kyle Bohm. Luyster got out of the inning with a fly out, a strike out and a pop out on a diving snag by Kinnear, the Ohio State catcher. The Buckeyes squandered a scoring opportunity in the fifth inning after loading the bases with only one out. With one out, Kinnear singled to right-center field before moving to third on a double by Anderson. Michigan starter Derek Feldkamp plunked Howell to load the bases for Caravati, who flied out to right field. Michigan right fielder Matt Butler threw home to nab Kinnear and prevent the tying run.
The Buckeyes managed the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-out solo home run by Brett Garrard (Sr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg). The home run was his third of the season.
Luyster improved to 3-3 after pitching a three-hit complete game, allowing the only Michigan run in the fourth inning, to go with five strikeouts and a three walks. Feldkamp fell to 4-4 with the loss. He allowed both runs on nine hits and walked three without a strikeout.
Immediately following the game, Ohio State retired the jersey of Steve Arlin, a two-time All-American in 1965-66, who lead the Buckeyes to the 1966 national championships. His No. 22 jersey was the second baseball jersey retired by the school after retiring the No. 27 jersey of Fred Taylor, the first Ohio State baseball All-American, last season.
Ohio State plays a second game against Michigan later Saturday before concluding the series Sunday with a single game at 1:05 p.m.
