COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (4-2) men’s volleyball team swept D’Youville (2-3), 30-28, 30-13, 30-21, Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Sam Stevens (So., Miami, Fla.) came off the bench with D’Youville leading, 15-14, in game one to score a team-high 10 points in the match, collecting six kills, two ace serves, a solo block and two assist blocks. Buckeye Adam Pedersen (Sr., Muskego, Wis.) added 8.5 points with eight kills and an assist block in his first action after missing the last three matches. D’Youville’s Bill Schultz produced a match-high 13 points with 12 kills and a solo block for the Spartans with Michael Rozek adding 7.5 points with seven kills and an assist block.
Ohio State held a 13-10 lead in game one before D’Youville produced a five-point run capped with a John Colosi kill to give the Spartans a 15-14 lead going into the technical time out. D’Youville added a block by Rozek and Clinton Gilliland and a Buckeye error to expand the lead to 17-14. With the Spartans holding a 19-16 lead, three straight D’Youville errors tied the game at 19. The Spartans responded with kills from Colosi and Schultz to go ahead, 21-19. OSU trailed, 25-22, before a D’Youville error, an ace serve by Mark Peckham (Sr., London, Ontario) and a kill by Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) tied the game at 25. Kills by Rozek and Colosi for D’Youville and Wauligman and Andy Cole (So., Glendale, Wis.) for OSU moved the score to 27-all. A Rozek kill gave the Spartans a 28-27 lead but a D’Youville error tied the game at 28. A Spartan hitting error set game point for OSU at 29-28. OSU’s Cole fired an ace serve to close the game at 30-28, Ohio State. D’Youville hit .216 for the game to .206 for the Buckeyes. From a two-all tie in game two, Ohio State produced a 6-0 run to open an 8-2 lead. The run began with back-to-back ace serves by Stevens. A Spartan error, a block by Pedersen and Peckham and a Pedersen kill made it 7-2 as D’Youville called time out. OSU made it 8-2 with a Spartan error. OSU had several point runs in the game and closed it out with a Stevens’ kill at 30-13. Ohio State hit .400 for the game to -.114 for D’Youville.
Tied at seven in game three, two OSU errors made it 9-7, D’Youville. Buckeye kills by Brett Hamilton (Jr., Rockville, Md.) and Ricardo Garcia (Sr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) and blocks by Hamilton and Stevens and Garcia and Hamilton gave OSU an 11-10 lead. A Schultz kill and an OSU error made it 12-11, D’Youville. A Gilliland kill tied the game at 12. A Buckeye kill by Layne Dreven (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and a Spartan error made it 14-12. Following a Schultz kill (14-13), a Garcia kill and a Spartan error made it 16-13, OSU. A Rozek kill cut the margin to 16-14. The Buckeyes then went on a five-point run with kills by Dreven, Garcia and Stevens, a block by Peckham and Hamilton and a solo block by Hamilton to take a 21-14 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead and with a Garcia kill, won the game, 30-21. Ohio State hit .324 for the game to .086 for D’Youville.
For the match, Ohio State hit .295 to .065 for the Spartans. The Buckeyes had a 41-34 advantage in kills and out served D’Youville, 6-2. OSU’s Peckham and Stevens each recorded two aces in the match. The Spartans gave up 11 service errors to 10 for Ohio State. Defensively, OSU had a 34-26 advantage in digs with D’Youville’s Michael Cole recording a match-high nine digs. At the net, Ohio State out blocked D’Youville, 9-2 in team blocks. OSU’s Hamilton had a match-high five blocks in the match with one solo and four assists. OSU’s Peckham recorded 38 assists in the contest while D’Youville’s Bryan Walczak had 21 assists.
Ohio State will play at Lewis Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. The Flyers are the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and NCAA defending champions.
OSU MATCH NOTES:
This was the first contest in men’s volleyball between Ohio State and D’Youville.
Dan Meske scored his first kill of his career on an overpass that was not returned.
Ricardo Garcia saw action in two games, hitting a season-high .333 with seven kills, two errors in 15 attempts. He also had a season-high two assist blocks against the Spartans.
Mark Peckham recorded his first two ace serves of the season against D’Youville.
Brett Hamilton saw action in game three, producing a match-high five total blocks with a solo and four assists. His blocks, two kills and an ace serve produced a season-high six points.
Sam Stevens scored a career-high two ace serves against the Spartans. He also equaled his career-high of six digs in the match.
Adam Pedersen played in the first two games and hit a season-high .636 with eight kills in 11 attempts with just one error.
Mike Wauligman saw his first front-row action in the last four matches. (He came in as a server in both Brigham Young matches. He had eight kills in the outing and equaled his season-high of six digs against the Spartans.
