WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ohio State scored six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back on its way to a 10-6 victory over Purdue Sunday to complete a four-game sweep of the Boilermakers at Lambert Field.
Ohio State scored six runs, all with two outs, in the top of the first inning to take command early. Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) singled up the middle with one out to get the scoring started. Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) singled to right-center field to move Rabin to third. Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) popped out to second base for the second out of the inning and then Cody Caughenbaugh (Fr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) walked to load the bases.
Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) delivered with a bases clearing double down the right field line that gave the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead. Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) was hit by a pitch and then both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch by Purdue starter Daniel Underwood. A double by Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) scored both Kinnear and Pettorini to make the score 5-0.
The sixth run of the inning was knocked in by Jedidiah Stephen (Fr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah), who singled down the right-field line to plate Garrard and give the Buckeyes a 6-0 lead. Purdue responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own, capitalizing on hits by Simon Klink and John Hunter to pull within four.
Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) had a two-run home run in the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 6-2. The shot over the left-field fence was his fifth of the season and scored Garrard, who boarded with a one-out base hit up the middle and then advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch.
Three hits started the Purdue sixth inning. Hunter led off with a base hit to center field and then Andy Rempel singled to right to put two on for Brad Kriner, who knocked both of them in with a double to left center. That cut the score to 10-4 and prompted a pitching change. Matt Davis (So., Mason, Ohio/William Mason) came in with no one out. He walked pinch hitter Neal Gorka and then gave up a base hit to shallow right field to Mitch Koester. Kriner scored on a base hit by Ben Fritz and then Gorka scored on a fielder’s choice by Nick McIntyre.
Chris Hanners (So., Groveport, Ohio/DeSales) left the game after five full innings allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk. He picked up the win to move to 4-1 on the year. Davis gave up one run (earned) on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in pitching the final two innings. Underwood got the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. He pitched the first four innings, allowing eight runs (all earned) on seven hits. He walked one and struck out two. Josh Herman and Dustin Glant also pitched for the Boilermakers.
Garrard finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Anderson and Stephen also had multiple hits to lead the Buckeyes’ 11-hit charge.
The sweep was the second by the Buckeyes this season, going with a sweep of Iowa April 11-13. It was the first sweep on the road for Ohio State since taking four at Minnesota in 2001. OSU has now won 14 of its last 16 games and improved to 27-12 overall and 14-6 in the Big Ten. Ohio State did pick up a game on Minnesota Sunday as the Gophers split a doubleheader at Indiana. Minnesota leads Ohio State by just two games with three weeks remaining in the season.
Ohio State returns home Wednesday to play host to Bowling Green at 6:35 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium. The game will be broadcast on WOSU Radio (820 AM).
