Box Score
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ohio State scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a wild pitch and three-run home run by catcher Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) to beat Purdue 4-0 to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Boilermakers Saturday at Lambert Field.
The doubleheader shutouts were the first by Ohio State since 1999 when the Buckeyes beat Purdue 1-0 and 3-0 on May 1 in Columbus.
Ohio State broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning, capitalizing on a lead-off double by Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg). A sacrifice bunt by Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) moved Anderson to third and then Purdue decided to board Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio, Defiance) with the four-pitch walk. Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) popped up a squeeze bunt that was caught by the pitcher for the second out of the inning.
Anderson scored on a wild pitch to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead and then Cody Caughenbaugh (Fr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) walked to put runners and first and second for Kinnear. The Buckeye catcher and candidate for the Johnny Bench Award, hit his fourth home run of the season to put the Buckeyes on top 4-0.
Buckeye starting pitcher Josh Newman (Jr., Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg) responded in the bottom of the inning, despite allowing a lead-off hit to Daniel Underwood. He struck out the next three batters, including the first two on called strikes. Those strikeouts were his fifth, sixth and seventh of the game and the most since a seven-strikeout effort against in a win over Northwestern March 28. Newman got the complete game victory to move to 4-3 on the year. He gave up six hits with a pair of walks and the seven strikeouts. Chris Toneguzzi got the loss in 5 2/3 innings, allowing all four runs (earned) on four hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.
Toneguzzi was hot to start the game despite Snavely reaching on a fielding error on Boilermakers’ second baseman Tyler Johnstone in the first inning. He was Ohio State’s only base runner until the fifth inning. From that error, Toneguzzi went on to retire the next 12 batters of the game.
That streak was broken up by designated hitter Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) doubled to the wall in left-center field to break up the no-hitter with two outs in the fifth inning. An infield single by Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) moved Pettorini to third, but a ground out by Jedidiah Stephen (Fr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) ended the inning.
The four Buckeye hits came from Anderson, Kinnear, Pettorini and Garrard, but none was bigger than Kinnear’s three-run shot in the sixth. He had a three-run home run last Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against Indiana that tied the score in the bottom of the seventh and sent the game to extra innings, where the Buckeyes won 13-12 in the 10th.
Another plus for the Buckeyes, who are ninth in the Big Ten in fielding, is that they did not have an error for the third straight game, going back to Wednesday night’s victory over Shawnee State.
The series concludes with a Sunday doubleheader beginning at 2:05 p.m. (EDT).
