Lewis struck out two in the first before striking out the side in the second inning. He retired the first eight batters of the game before walking shortstop Mitch Koester. He then gave up a hit to Tyler Johnstone, but got the out at second on an fielder’s choice to the shortstop to end the inning.
Lewis struck out the side in the fourth to get strikeouts six, seven and eight of the game and then got just two strikeouts the rest of the game – one in the fifth and the final out of the game.
Anderson had hits to lead off the game, a shot to left that scored one in the fifth and a shot to left-centerfield that scored two. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and scored once.
Ohio State scored in the top of the second inning on a single to left-center field by Cody Caughenbaugh (Fr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley). That shot scored Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) who doubled down the left-field line with one out to set up the score.
Ohio State got the lead off runner on base for the fourth time of the game in the fifth inning with a hit by Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) to center field. He moved to second a sacrifice bunt by Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg). Anderson singled to left to bring home Kinnear and build the Buckeye lead to 2-0. Anderson go this third hit of the game in the top of the seventh inning, a shot to left-center, to bring in both Kinnear and Garrard and up the OSU lead to 4-0. The hit was the fourth straight hit of the inning. Kinnear led off the inning with a base hit through the right side and then Garrard followed with a shot to shallow centerfield. Jedidiah Stephen (Fr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) singled to nearly the same spot to load the bases for Anderson, who sent a shot to the wall just left of straight-away center field.
That prompted a pitching change as the Boilermakers brought in Trae Dauby in for starter Mitch Pruemer. Dauby walked the first batter he faced to re-load the bases and then Snavely sacrificed himself with a fly to right field that scored Stephen to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Buckeyes. After another fly out, Farinacci had an infield single to third and then Wes Schritzinger (Fr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) walked with the bases loaded to plate the Buckeyes’ sixth run of the game.
Lewis got the two-hit, complete game shutout to improve to 7-0 on the year and 4-0 in the Big Ten. He now has 77 strikeouts in his last five starts and 46 Ks in his last three games. His ERA lowered to 1.24 in his 65 1/3 innings this season and 0.46 in conference games. He has 104 total strikeouts.
