COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four different Ohio State pitchers tossed a two-hit 9-0 shutout and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Shawnee State Wednesday night at Bill Davis Stadium. The win improved Ohio State to 23-12 on the year.
As much as the story was about pitching, the same can be said for hitting as seven Buckeyes accounted for 11 hits, including multiple hits by Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and Jedidiah Stephen (Fr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah). Fourteen players batted for Ohio State as the team made several changes in the sixth and seventh innings.
Anderson got things going for the Buckeyes in the bottom of the first inning, turning in his fourth triple of the season into the first run of the game. He scored on a ground out by Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) to give the Buckeyes an early 1-0 lead. The lead-off triple was the eighth of his career, which ties him for eighth all-time.
Anderson added a one-out single as the Buckeyes scored twice in the third. Rabin grounded out for the second out of the inning, moving Anderson to second. Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) and designated hitter Steve Caravati (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura), who responded with a base hit to left-center field that scored two, extending the Buckeye lead to 3-0. Stephen scored Cody Caughenbaugh (Fr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) with a double to the gap in right-center and then scored himself on a base hit through the left side by Rabin. The pair of scores extended the lead to 5-0.
Ohio State scored another to runs in the fifth on consecutive hits by Caughenbaugh and Garrard. Caravati led off the inning with a walk before the first two outs of the inning. Pettorini stole second and on an errant wide throw from Shawnee State catcher Andrew Malone advanced to third.
The Buckeyes went scoreless in the sixth and seventh, but added another two runs in the eighth to build the 9-0 final margin. Garrard and Stephen led off the inning with back-to-back base hits before Anderson lined into a double play that caught Stephen at first. Garrard had moved to third on Stephen’s single to right. A pair of walks loaded the bases and then designated hitter Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) doubled down the left-field line to plate Garrard and Wes Schirtzinger (Fr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), who had the first of the two walks.
Rabin, Pettorini and Farinacci each finished the game with a pair of RBI, though each had just one hit.
Left-hander Chris Hanners (So., Groveport, Ohio/DeSales) got the mid-week start, pitching the first four innings without allowing a hit and striking out five batters. OSU coach Bob Todd went into the game with the plan to throw several pitchers in the game, so Hanners go the start to improve to 3-1 on the season. The lefty was replaced by Mike Madsen (So., Chesterland, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) to start the fifth. He went three innings allowing the first hit in the sixth. Trent Luyster (So., Flushing, Ohio/Harrison Central) and Matt Davis (So., Mason, Ohio/William Mason) each pitched an inning.
Shawnee State starter Derrick Heming got the loss in five innings to fall to 1-4 on the season. He gave up seven runs (all earned) on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Ohio State, which remained perfect in four mid-week contests this season, now takes to the road to meet Purdue in a four-game Big Ten series in West Lafayette, Ind. The teams will play a single game at 4:05 p.m. (EDT) Friday and will then square off in a doubleheader Saturday at 2:05 p.m. The series will conclude Sunday at 2:05 p.m. The first game Saturday and the Sunday finale will be broadcast on WOSU Radio (820 AM).
