Ohio State Takes Game One from Northwestern 4-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

BRADENTON, Fla. – Josh Newman (Jr. Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg) took a shutout into the bottom of the seventh before Northwestern scored its only run of the game in a 4-1 win by Ohio State Friday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at IMG Academy.
Newman was going for a second straight shutout by the Buckeye pitching staff, but that bid was broken up in the bottom of the seventh inning as Pat McMahon doubled in Mark Ori, who reached on a fielder’s choice on a ground ball to second base. That run ended a streak of 22 scoreless innings by Buckeye pitching. Scott Lewis (So., Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington) shut out the Wildcats in Thursday’s series opener.
Newman allowed the one run (earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts, including the final out of the game. He had just one walk in evening his record to 2-2 on the year. J.A. Happ got the loss for Northwestern to fall to 3-2. He pitched 6.0 innings allowing the four OSU runs on nine hits. Evan Blesoff pitched the final inning for the Wildcats.
Ohio State scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Catcher Derek Kinnear (Jr., Kenton, Ohio/Kenton) singled to leftfield to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Jedidiah Stephen (Fr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah). He moved to third on a ground out to second by Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) and then scored on a base hit through the left side by Steve Caravati (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover). The Buckeyes added a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. After a flyout by designated hitter Terry Pettorini (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), first baseman Paul Farinacci (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) drew a walk. The seventh double of the season by second baseman Drew Anderson (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) put runners in scoring position. Rightfielder Doug Larason flew out to rightfield to score Farinacci on the sacrifice and then a base knock through the right side
Stephen gave the Buckeyes a 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning with his first career home run, a shot over the fence in left field.
Anderson finished the game 3-for-3 with one run as the Buckeyes collected nine hits in the game. Caravati also had a pair of hits in four at bats with the first RBI of the game. Gresky was 2-for-2 for the Wildcats.
Ohio State and Northwestern will conclude the doubleheader later Saturday and then conclude the opening series of Big Ten play Saturday with a single nine-inning game Saturday at 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the radio by WOSB-FM (106.7 and 91.1).
