COLUMBUS, Ohio – Left-handed pitcher Trent Luyster (Jr., Flushing, Ohio/Harrison Central) pitched five innings and struck out five batters while allowing just one run in a 4-1 seven-inning victory by the Gray over the Scarlet in the opening game of the best-of-five series Monday at Bill Davis Stadium.
Centerfielder Jacob Howell (Fr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) delivered three hits in four at bats, knocked in an run and scored another, while teammate and second baseman Tony Kennedy (Fr., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) added two hits in his three at bats with one RBI and one run.
Scarlet starter Trey Fausnaugh (Fr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) kept the Gray hitless until it exploded for three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Howell led off the inning with a triple to left-centerfield and then scored on a single up the middle by Kennedy. He scored from first on a double by Wes Schirtzinger (So., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Gray.
The Gray added a run in the top of the seventh inning thanks to a lead-off walk by Jason Zoeller (Fr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and a two-out walk to Jeffery Carroll (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson). Howell singled in Zoeller for the fourth run of the game. The visiting half of the inning ended when Carroll was thrown out at third on the play.
The Scarlet team scored first getting one run in the bottom of the second inning. Jedidiah Stephen (So., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) found the gap in right-centerfield for a one-out double. He moved to third on a grounder to second by Ronnie Bourquin (Fr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) and later scored on a base hit through the left side by Nick Feucht (Fr., Marysville, Ohio/Marysville). That gave the Scarlet an early 1-0 lead. Five different batters had hits for the Scarlet, which were out-hit by the Gray 8-5. Each team had one error.
Fausnaugh was the losing pitcher. He allowed seven hits in six innings with one strikeout and two walks. He gave up three of the four runs. The other run was charged to reliever Jesse Paciorek (Jr., Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood). Mike Madsen (Jr., Chesterland, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) picked up the save, going the final two innings for the Scarlet. He struck out three batters and allowed only two hits without a run.
The teams continue the best-of-five series Tuesday at 3 p.m. and will then play Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Games four and five, if necessary, will be played Thursday and Friday at 3 p.m.
