COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-2) men’s volleyball squad will play host to St. Francis (1-1) at 7 p.m., Fri., Jan. 24 in St. John Arena.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Ohio State Buckeyes, coached by Pete Hanson, have an overall record of 2-2. OSU opened the season at home with wins over Concordia 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-27) and George Mason 3-2 (28-30, 30-26, 30-25, 29-31, 15-11) and road losses at UC-San Diego last Saturday, 1-3 (30-26, 27-30, 26-30, 20-30) and Sunday 0-3 (28-30, 23-30, 15-30). Tom Trantow (Sr., River Forest, Ill.) is the leader in kills per game for Ohio State with a 4.73 per game average. Second is Andy Cole (Fr., Glendale, Wis.) at 2.83 and Mike Wauligman (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) is third at 2.75. Adam Pedersen (Jr., Muskego, Wis.) and Scott Spurlock (So., Stow, Ohio) are the leading percentage hitters on the squad at .471. Setter Mark Peckham (Jr., London, Ontario) is averaging 12.87 assists per game. Trantow and Brett Hamilton (So., Rockville, Md.) are tied for the team lead in ace serves with three each. Defensively, Mark Greaves (Fr., Fenton, Mo.) is the team leader in digs per game with a 1.60 average. Second is Aaron Dillon (Jr., Winfield, Ill.) at 1.45. Leading the team in blocking is Pedersen with a 1.20 per game average on two solos and 16 assists. Hamilton is second at .91 with 10 assists. As a team, Ohio State is averaging 14.87 kills per game and is hitting .289. OSU averages .73 aces, 6.87 digs and 2.30 blocks per game. OSU opponents are averaging 14.53 kills per game and are hitting .329. Opponents average 1.40 aces, 7.27 digs and 3.13 blocks per game.
A LOOK AT ST. FRANCIS
The St. Francis Red Flash, coached by Mike Rumbaugh, opened the season 1-1 last week. St. Francis defeated SUNY-New Platz 3-0 (30-27, 30-23, 30-18) then lost at Springfield 0-3 (21-30, 23-30, 26-30). Jim Fazzini is the team leader in kills per game (3.67) and in digs per game (3.33). Kelly Brandon is second in kills at 3.50. Both Chris Kennedy (8.50 assists per game) and Chad O’Brien (11.00) have shared the setting duties for the Red Flash. Dave Paschel and Taylor Whitehurst each have a team-high five ace serves on the season. At the net, Steve Connell has recorded seven assist blocks for a team-high 1.17 blocks per game. In the two matches played St. Francis is averaging 13.17 kills per game and is hitting .181. The Red Flash average 2.33 aces, 11.50 digs and 1.92 blocks per game. The opponents are averaging 11.50 kills per game and are hitting .240. St. Francis opponents are averaging .50 aces. 6.67 digs and 3.25 blocks per game.
THE OHIO STATE -ST. FRANCIS SERIES
Ohio State leads the series with St. Francis, 6-0. Four of the six victories have come in Columbus. The last meeting was in 2001, a 3-0 (30-15, 30-26, 3-24) Buckeye victory in Loretto, Pa.

FRESHMAN GREAVES GETS STARTING NOD
Freshman outside hitter Mark Greaves with starts in OSU’s first four matches last week. Greaves produced a season-high 12 kills and hit .429 in his first match against Concordia. He added a season-high nine digs against George Mason. He is the team leader in digs with 24 for a 1.60 per game average.
FRESHMAN COLE HAS THREE STARTS LAST WEEK
Freshman outside hitter Andy Cole did not play in OSU’s opening match but was in the starting lineup for the final three matches last week. Cole had a season-high 15 kills, five digs and two blocks in his first start against George Mason. He added 12 kills, eight digs and three blocks in OSU’s first match at UC-San Diego and contributed seven kills, three digs and two blocks in the second match. In his three starts, Cole produced 34 kills for a 2.83 kills per game average.
PEDERSEN CONTROLLING THE NET
Middle hitter Adam Pedersen is the team leader in blocks with 18 including two solos and 16 assists. He is averaging 1.20 blocks per game. He produced a season-high seven blocks against George Mason with a solo and six assists. He had five total blocks against Concordia (0-5) and the first match at UC-San Diego (1-4). Pedersen is also the top hitter on the squad with a .471 percentage.
TRANTOW LEADING THE BUCKEYE ATTACK
Outside hitter Tom Trantow is OSU’s leading hitter with a 4.73 kills per game average on 71 kills. He has scored double-figure kills in all four matches this season. He had 12 kills against Concordia, a season-high 23 against George Mason and 18 kills in each of the matches at UC-San Diego.
SETTER PECKHAM DIRECTING THE OFFENSE
Guiding the Buckeye offense is setter Mark Peckham. Averaging 12.87 assists per game, he produced a season-high 58 assists against George Mason. Offensively, he has scored four kills in matches against George Mason and the first UC-San Diego match. Defensively, Peckham had a season-high five digs in the second UC-San Diego match and twice has had four assist blocks in a match (George Mason and UC-San Diego-1).
REVIEWING LAST WEEK
#13 OHIO STATE 3, CONCORDIA 0
Ohio State needed only 85 minutes to defeat Concordia 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-27) in the season opener in St. John Arena. OSU’s Tom Trantow and Mark Greaves each recorded a match-high 12 kills with Mike Wauligman adding 11 for the Buckeyes. Concordia’s Rafael Diaz had a team-high nine kills with Peterson Metellus adding six. Game one was tied at 22 before OSU won 30-25. Game two was tied at 26 before OSU took the lead for a 30-28 win. OSU held an early lead in game three at 6-2 and held on for a 30-27 win. OSU out hit Concordia, 302 to .202 and had a 50-34 advantage in kills. The Buckeyes recorded a 5-3 margin in ace serves but gave up 18 service errors to 14 for the Clippers. OSU had a 24-22 advantage in digs with OSU’s Trantow and Concordia’s Lorenzo Diaz sharing match-high honors with six each. The Buckeyes had a nine to six margin in team blocks with OSU’s Adam Pedersen recording a match-high five assists. OSU setter Mark Peckham had 44 assists while Jesus Perez had 30 for the Clippers.
#13 OHIO STATE 3, GEORGE MASON 2
Ohio State held off a George Mason comeback that tied the match at two games each as OSU went on to win 3-2 (28-30, 30-26, 30-25, 29-31, 15-11). OSU’s Tom Trantow had a match-high 23 kills with Andy Cole adding 15, Adam Pedersen 11 and Mark Greaves 10. Patriot Shaun Powell scored a team-high 16 kills for George Mason with Matt Steinfurth and James Claney adding 11 each and Art Kulans 10. Tied at 28 in game one, GMU scored twice for the win. The Buckeyes took games two and three to lead two games to one. The Patriots held a 29-25 lead in game four before OSU tied the game at 29. An OSU error and a GMU block ended the game at 31-29 sending the match to a fifth game. OSU took the early lead and never trailed winning 15-11 to win the match. The Patriots out hit OSU, .262. to .261. OSU had a 69-60 margin in kills. George Mason had a six-five margin in ace serves but recorded 28 errors to 21 for the Buckeyes. Ohio State had a 30-28 advantage in digs with OSU’s Aaron Dillon recording a match-high 10. George Mason out blocked OSU 18.5-10.5. OSU setter Mark Peckham had 58 assists to 52 for Patriot Dave Egan.
UC-SAN DIEGO 3, #13 OHIO STATE 1
Ohio State lost 3-1 (26-30, 30-17, 30-26, 30-20) at UC-San Diego in the first of two matches against the Tritons. UC-San Diego’s Jim Waller pounded down 30 kills for the Tritons with Adam Toren adding 18. OSU’s Tom Trantow scored a team-high 18 kills with Andy Cole adding 12. After hitting .469 in a game one 30-26 win, OSU could not match with Tritons hitting. UC-San Diego out hit OSU .342-.320 in game two, .483-.290 in game three and .452-.296 in game four. For the match, the Tritons hit .377 to .348 and had a 73-60 advantage in kills. UC-San Diego out served the Buckeyes, eight to one with Waller scoring a match-high five aces while giving up 16 service errors to 13 for OSU. The Tritons had a 31-25 advantage in digs with OSU’s Cole recording a match-high eight. The Tritons out blocked Ohio State, 12.5 to 10.5 with OSU’s Adam Pedersen (1 solo, 4 assists) and Scott Spurlock (0-5) and UCSD’s Waller, T.J. Young and Kevin Keyser picking up five assists each. Triton setter Eric Perrine had 65 assists in the match to OSU’s Adam Peckham’s 50.
UC-SAN DIEGO 3, #13 OHIO STATE 0
In the second match against UC-San Diego, Ohio State could not match the hot hitting Tritons, losing 3-0 (30-28, 30-23, 30-15). UCSD’s Jim Waller had 18 kills and T.J. Young added 17 for the Tritons. OSU’s Tom Trantow shared match-high honors with Waller with 18 kills with Andy Cole adding seven. Ohio State stayed close in game one but fell 30-28. The Buckeyes then faced a hot hitting Tritons who hit .533 in game two and .542 in game three to sweep Ohio State. UC-San Diego hit .477 for the match to .245 for Ohio State. The Tritons had a 51-44 advantage in kills and recorded four aces to none for the Buckeyes. OSU gave up 12 service errors to 10 for UCSD. The Tritons had a 28-24 margin in digs with Adam Toren digging a match-high nine. UC-San Diego out blocked Ohio State 9.5 to 4.5. Triton Brian Foott recorded a match-high five assists. UCSD’s setter Eric Perrine had 43 assists in the match to OSU’s Mark Peckham’s 41.
ST. JOHN ARENA, HOME OF THE BUCKEYES
Historic St. John Arena is the home court for both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams. The facility is also used for gymnastics, wrestling and fencing. The men’s volleyball program has enjoyed great success in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes have a 343-69 record over the last 35 years. In the five previous seasons, OSU is 57-7 (.891) in the Arena. With a capacity of 13,276, St. John Arena has hosted three NCAA Men’s Championships (1978, 1983, 1997).
HEAD COACH PETE HANSON
In his 19th year at Ohio State, Pete Hanson has put together one of the top men’s volleyball teams in the country. His squads have won six Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championships in the last 10 years and captured two of the last three MIVA Tournament Championships. The 2000 squad advanced to the NCAA Championship match before losing to UCLA. For his team’s efforts, Hanson was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year. The 1998 team, ranked second in the country in the latter stages of the season, finished sixth in the USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches Poll. They also were honored as the top team in the final regular season Volleyball Magazine Poll. That magazine honored Hanson as the Coach of the Year for his 25-2 season and the MIVA regular-season championship.
Hanson has a career record of 364-226 in 20 seasons and is 350-217 in his 19-year tenure with the Buckeyes. His squads have won eight MIVA championships and made five NCAA tournament appearances. Hanson has been named the MIVA Coach of the Year five times including the 2000 season.
UPCOMING OHIO STATE MATCHES
Ohio State will host Springfield College in back-to-back matches on Feb. 1 and 2. OSU closes out the home stand the next week with a conference match against Clarke College Friday, Feb. 7. The Buckeyes then travel to Findlay on Saturday, Feb. 8. All the matches start at 7 p.m.
