ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan starting pitcher Jim Brauer struck out eight Buckeyes and carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning to beat Ohio State 1-0 in the second game and sweep the Saturday doublheader from the Buckeyes at Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan, which improved to 16-27 overall and 10-13 in the Big Ten, scored its only run on a pair of base hits and two errors on the Buckeye defense. After a strikeout to start the inning, Brock Koman singled to shortstop Brett Garrard (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) who threw the ball past first baseman Doug Dendinger (Sr., Greenwich, Ohio/South Central). Koman advanced to second.
Then after OSU starter Josh Newman (So., Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg) plunked Jake Fox to put runners at first and second, designated hitter Gino Lollio singled to second baseman Christian Snavely (So., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) threw high to home trying to catch Koman at the plate.
Brauer went the distance in getting his first career complete game. He walked only two Buckeyes and retired 11 consecutive batters before Joe Wilkins (Sr., Grove City, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) got the first Ohio State hit in the fifth inning.
Ohio State threatened in the sixth inning. Mike Rabin (Fr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) was hit by a pitch by Brauer and then Snavely reached on a bunt down the third base line. Garrard moved the runners up on a sacrifice bunt and then after a strikeout by Doug Deeds (So., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley), Nick Swisher (Jr., Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Dendinger grounded to second to end the inning and stranded the bases loaded. Newman fell to 7-4 with the loss. He allowed only three hits, while walking two and striking out three. But the difference was defense as Ohio State committed two errors.
The Buckeyes, which dropped to 27-15-1 overall and 14-8 in the Big Ten, left six runners on base compared to four by the Wolverines.
The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
