Ohio State Takes 9-2 Victory from Minnesota – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State left little doubt in game one handing Minnesota a 9-1 loss to make the fourth and final game of the series for all the marbles. The game will be played 20 minutes after game one was completed.
Ohio State jumped out to the early lead getting its first fun on a sacrifice fly by Nick Swisher (Jr., Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) that scored Brett Garrard (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) from third. Garrard got on with a walked and advanced to third on a double by Christian Snavely (So., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance). A base hit by Doug Dendinger (Sr., Greenwich, Ohio/South Central) scored Snavely to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead.
The Buckeyes benefited from three walks and two hits in take a 6-0 lead in the fourth. Dendinger walked and Wilkins singled. A walk to Drew Anderson (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) loaded the bases and then another walk by Minnesota starter Josh Krogman scored the third run for the Buckeyes. That prompted a pitching change, bringing in Tim Thies in relief.
Thies got Mike Rabin (Fr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) to fly out before Snavely smacked a bases clearing double to put Ohio State on top 6-0.
Minnesota scored a run in the top of the fifth, but Ohio State got it right back and then some in the bottom half, scoring three more times to go up 9-1. Doug Deeds (So., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley), Swisher and Wilkins all scored on two hits. Ohio State also capitalized on two errors by the Gophers. Minnesota added a run in the top of the seventh.
Wilkins finished 2-for-3 in the game with and RBI and two runs scored. Deeds also had two hits for the Buckeyes in four official at bats, and also scored twice. For the Gophers, Scott Welch went 2-for-3.
Scott Lewis (Fr., Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington Court House) pitched the complete game for the Buckeyes in improving to 6-2 on the season. He struck out five and walked two, giving up both Gopher runs on five hits. Krogman got the loss giving up six runs (all earned) on five hits. He walked four and struck out only one in falling to 5-4.
