No. 25 Baseball Drops Game One of Doubleheader – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 25 Ohio State baseball team (28-10 overall, 9-5 in the Big Ten) fell 9-4 in game one of a doubleheader to Penn State (21-21 overall, 10-6 in the Big Ten) at Bill Davis Stadium.
Penn State jumped on the Buckeyes in the top of the first inning. Chris Wright belted a two-run home run off OSU starting pitcher Kevin Goodrum (Sr., Mentor, Ohio).
In the bottom half of the inning, OSU cut the PSU lead to 2-1. Mike Harris (Sr., Hillsborough, N.C.) led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Doug Deeds (Fr., Bexley, Ohio).
In the bottom of the second inning, the Buckeyes tied the game at two courtesy of another sacrifice fly. Christian Snavely (Fr., Defiance, Ohio) led off with a walk and was driven in by a Harris sacrifice.
PSU retook the lead in the top of the third inning. Rod Perry scored on a double steal to give the Nittany Lions a 3-2 lead.
The Nittany Lions added a run in the top of the fourth inning. Brian Bishop scored on a RBI single by Zack Smithlin to give PSU a 4-2 edge.
Ohio State tied the game in the fourth inning. Brett Garrard (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind.) and Joe Wilkins (Jr., Grove City, Ohio) connected on back-to-back singles to lead off. Garrard came home on a sacrifice fly by Harris. Mike Check (Sr., Bay Village, Ohio) drove Wilkins home with a single to left-center field.
Penn State took the lead back in the sixth inning when Willie Melendez grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, scoring Doug Rodio. The Nittany Lions tacked on four runs in the seventh inning to put the game away.
Kyle Blachuta (Fr., Bloomdale, Ohio) took the loss in relief. He falls to 2-1 on the season. Kyle Smith (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Nittany Lions.
Tomorrow, the teams conclude the four-game series at 1:05 p.m.
