No. 26 Baseball Loses to Michigan State, 14-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 26 Ohio State baseball team (25-8 overall, 7-3 in the Big Ten) allowed seven runs to Michigan State (17-16 overall, 4-8 in the Big Ten) in the first inning and never recovered. The Buckeyes lose game one of a doubleheader to the Spartans, 14-3, at Kobs Field. The loss ties the four game series at 1-1.
The Spartans jumped on the Buckeyes in the bottom half of the first inning with seven runs off six hits. Brett Wattles drove in a pair with a double and Kyle Geswein, Troy Bergman, Kevin Crews, Charlie Braun and Chris McCuiston drove in the other runs.
In the top of the second inning, OSU scored its first run of the game. Nick Swisher (So., Parkersburg, W.Va.) led off the inning by hitting his 11th home run of the season off a 2-1 offering from MSU starting pitcher John Huizinga.
In the top of the third inning, Mike Harris (Sr., Hillsborough, N.C.) led off with a single and immediately stole second base. Two batters later, he scored on single by Doug Deeds (Fr., Bexley, Ohio) to cut the MSU lead to 7-2. In the top half of the inning Crews scored on a single by Bob Malek to increase the MSU lead to 9-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, OSU added another run. With two outs, Doug Dendinger (Jr., Greenwich, Ohio) drilled a double to the center field wall. Deeds followed with his second RBI single of the game to cut the MSU lead to 8-3. In the bottom half of the inning, MSU added three runs off two hits. McCuiston, Burrill and Geswein drove in the runs.
Goodrum (3-1) took the loss. He went 0.1 innings, gave up six hits, seven runs (six earned runs) and a walk. Reliever Kyle Brown (So., Washington Court House, Ohio) pitched the remainder of the game and was solid. He went 5.2 innings, threw 107 pitches, gave up eight hits, seven runs, walked three and recorded three strikeouts. MSU’s Huizenga improved to 3-2 this season with the complete game victory. Tomorrow the teams conclude the four-game series with the finale at 1 p.m.
