BRADENTON, Fla. – Led by a sparkling 10-inning, complete game pitching performance from Greg Prenger (So., Harpster, Ohio), the Ohio State baseball team (14-4 overall) defeated the Harvard Crimson (2-7 overall), 1-0 at Wynn Field. In his first career shutout, Prenger threw 119 pitches, gave up eight hits, and recorded six strikeouts. The win improved his record to 2-0 on the season and increased the OSU winning streak to 11 games.
“Well, I’m tired,” Prenger said. “My fastball was really working and my defense made the plays when I let runners get on base. My only bad inning came in the second. I felt like I was getting behind the batters but other than that, I felt in control all night.”
In the bottom of the tenth inning, Trent McIlvain (Sr., Louisville, Ohio) led off with a walk and moved to second base on an infield single by Mike Harris (Sr., Hillsborough, N.C.). A sacrifice bunt by Mike Check (Sr., Bay Village, Ohio) moved both runners into scoring position and an intentional walk to Nick Swisher (So., Parkersburg, W.Va.) loaded the bases. Doug Dendinger (Jr., Greenwich, Ohio) followed and drove in McIlvain on a sacrifice fly to give OSU the win.
Harvard starting pitcher John Birtwell was just as impressive. He went 9.2 innings, gave up six hits and one run.
Tomorrow, OSU will conclude its Spring Break trip with a doubleheader. At 9:30 a.m., OSU will make up its cancelled game against Northwestern, originally scheduled on March 18. The Buckeyes will then play its scheduled game against Harvard after the conclusion of the Northwestern contest. Both games will be at Wynn Field.
