Newman Helps Lead OSU to a 10-2 Win Over Fairleigh Dickinson – Ohio State Buckeyes

BRADENTON, Fla. – %^$Led by a sparkling pitching performance from Josh Newman (Fr., Wheelersburg, Ohio), the Ohio State baseball team (11-4-1 overall) defeated the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights (1-7 overall), 10-2 at Wynn Field on the campus of Manatee Community College. Newman tossed six hitless innings, threw 72 pitches, walked one and recorded three strikeouts to earned his second win (2-1). Christian Snavely (Fr., Defiance, Ohio) led the offense going 2-for-4 with four runs batted in.%^$
%^$”This is the best I’ve felt all season long,” Newman said. “I had command of all my pitches and my defense did a great job. As a competitor, you never want to leave the game – especially if you have a chance for a no hitter. But we got the win and that’s the only thing that matters.”%^$
%^$The Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Harris (Sr., Hillsborough, N.C.) led off with a walk and scored two batters later on a single by Snavely.%^$
%^$OSU added five runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Brett Garrard (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind.) led off and reached base on a fielding error by FDU shortstop Alex Gomez. After a stolen base, Garrard moved to third on a single by Harris. The Knights then proceeded to give OSU the second run of the game when catcher John Hagan overthrew second base attempting to throw out Harris on a steal. Garrard scored on the miscue and gave OSU a 2-0 lead. Mike Check (Sr., Bay Village, Ohio) followed with a walk and the duo then scored on a single by Snavely. Doug Deeds (Fr., Bexley, Ohio) followed with a double and immediately scored when Todd Calcamuggio (Sr., Toledo, Ohio) reached base on another error by Hagen. Lance Rolston (So., Athens, Ohio) then plated Calcamuggio with a single to right field to increase the OSU lead to 6-0.%^$
%^$In the bottom of the sixth inning, OSU added three more runs to its lead and bring the score to 9-0. In the bottom half of the inning, the Knights cut the deficit to 9-2 with a pair of runs. Pat Geroni drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and A.J. DiMichele drove in a run with a single.%^$
%^$In the bottom of the seventh inning, OSU added its 10th run of the game on a RBI single by Terry Pettorini (Fr., Wooster, Ohio).%^$
%^$FDU starting pitcher Robert Roll earned the loss. He went 5.1 innings, gave up seven hits, nine runs (three earned) and walked three batters.%^$
%^$Tomorrow the Buckeyes continue their Spring Break trip with a game against Fairleigh Dickinson 12:15 p.m., at McKechnie Field, the spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates.%^$
%^$SCHEDULE NOTE: On Saturday, March 24, at 10 a.m., OSU and Vermont will complete the game suspended on March 18, because of rain at Lakewood Ranch Field. The game was stopped in the top of the ninth inning tied at one. On Sunday, March 25 at 9 a.m., OSU will make up its cancelled game against Northwestern, originally scheduled on March 18. That game will be played 9 a.m., at Wynn Field. OSU will play its scheduled game against Harvard after the conclusion of the Northwestern game.
