COLUMBUS, Ohio – Late inning heroics led the Ohio State baseball team (6-4 overall) over the Detroit Titans, 5-4 in Bill Davis Stadium. Brett Garrard (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind.) belted a three-run sixth inning home run and Cory Cox (Sr., Chillicothe, Ohio) slammed the door shut in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn his second save of the season.
The Titans took their first lead of the weekend in the top of the first inning. Zak Voit led off the game with a home run off OSU starting pitcher Greg Prenger (So., Harpster, Ohio).
In the top of the third inning, Detroit added three more runs to its lead. Matt Corbett hit a two-run home run and Tim Poley had a RBI single to bring the Titan’s lead to 4-0.
OSU cut the Detroit lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning. With one out, Steve Caravati (Fr., Dover, Ohio) walked and moved to third on a single by Doug Deeds (Fr., Bexley, Ohio). Lance Rolston (So., Athens, Ohio) followed and drove in Caravati with a single to center field. Two batters later, Brett Garrard (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind.) spanked a single to center field to score Deeds and cut the Titan’s lead, 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth the Buckeyes rallied to take the lead. With one out, Deeds doubled to right field. Two batters later, John Mayor (Sr., Chesterfield, Mo.) reached base on an error by Detroit shortstop Mike Malley. Garrard came to the plate and looked to be out in the inning but a dropped foul ball by Titan second baseman Zak Voit gave life to Garrard. The error proved costly as Garrard took the next pitch offered by Jason Horvat over the left field wall to give OSU a 5-4 lead.
Prenger did not factor into the decision. He went three innings, gave up five hits and four runs. Josh Newman (Fr., Wheelersburg, Ohio) earned his first win of the season (1-1). He went three innings and gave up just one hit.
The win gives OSU a three-game sweep over the Titans.
Next weekend OSU will travel to Brandenton, Fla., for spring break. On Friday the Buckeyes play Harvard at 10 a.m. at Robert C. Wynn Field on the campus of Manatee Community College.
