Scarlet Wins Game One of the Scarlet and Gray World Series – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Led by a superb pitching performance from ace E.J. Laratta (Sr., Englewood, Colo.), the Scarlet squad took game one of the Scarlet and Gray World Series , 10-1, at Bill Davis Stadium. The All-Big Ten performer went five innings, gave up five hits, one run and recorded four strikeouts.
“We wanted to set the tone for the series in game one,” Laratta said. “All the guys on my squad have a tremendous amount of pride. We want to win every game and we feel like weare the more talented team.”
The Gray team took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Drew Anderson (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind.) led off with a single and later scored on a ground out by Terry Pettorini (So., Wooster, Ohio). In the bottom half of the inning, the Scarlet team fired back with a pair of runs. Doug Deeds (So., Bexley, Ohio) and Lance Rolston (Jr., Athens, Ohio) scored on a double by Paul Farinacci (Fr., Westlake Village, Calif.) to give the Scarlet squad a 2-1 edge.
The Scarlet squad tacked on five runs to its lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, Mike Rabin (Fr., West Chester, Ohio) reached base on an error by Gray second baseman Christian Snavely (So., Defiance, Ohio). Doug Dendinger (Sr., Greenwich, Ohio) followed and slammed a double off the left-center field wall. After a walk by Deeds and a single by Rolston, Brett Garrard (So., Brownsburg, Ind.) hammered a 0-1 offering from Jesse Paciorek (Fr., Mentor, Ohio) over the leftfield wall for a three-rum home run. The blast gave the Scarlet team a 7-1 lead. The Scarlet team added yet another run in the inning when Farinacci scored on an infield single by Kelly Houser (Fr. New Holland, Ohio).
The Scarlet team added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Gray starting pitcher Josh Newman (So., Wheelersburg, Ohio) took the loss. He went five innings, gave up two runs and recorded four strikeouts.
