COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Gray team rallied with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Scarlet squad, 13-11, and win the 2001 Scarlet and Gray World Series. The Gray offense was paced by Christian Snavely’s (So., Defiance, Ohio) 4-for-5 afternoon with three runs batted in. With the victory, the Gray team wins the best-of-five series, 3-1.
The Gray took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Christian Snavely (So., Defiance, Ohio) reached base on a fielding error by Scarlet first baseman Doug Dendinger (Sr., Greenwich, Ohio). Terry Pettorini (So., Wooster, Ohio) followed and slammed a double of the center field wall to give the first lead of the game to the Gray.
In the bottom of the third inning, Snavely singled to drive in Drew Anderson (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind) to give the Gray a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Scarlet took a 5-2 lead. Lance Rolston (Jr., Athens, Ohio) smashed a two-run double. Brooks Graff (Fr., Green Bay, Wis.) followed with a one-run single to left field. Graff later scored on a wild pitch and throwing error. Two batters later, Joe Wilkins (Sr., Grove City, Ohio) hammered an RBI double to give the Gray its fifth run of the inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Scarlet added another run to its lead on a RBI single by Brian Panke (Fr., Jenks, Okla.).
In the bottom of the sixth, the Gray cut the lead to 6-3. Snavely scored on a two-out single by Josh Newman (So., Wheelersburg, Ohio). In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Gray tacked on six runs to take a 9-6 lead. Anderson, Derek Kinnear (So., Ironton, Ohio) and Snavely belted three consecutive doubles to bring in four of the runs. Newman drove another run with a single and Cody Caughenbaugh (Fr., Newark, Ohio) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the sixth run of the inning.
The offense continued in the eighth inning with both teams scoring four runs each.
Scarlet starting pitcher Trent Luyster (Fr., Luyster, Ohio) was impressive. He went four innings, gave up three hits and one run. Gray reliever Kyle Blachuta (So., Bloomdale, Ohio) picked up the win pitching the final two innings, recording four strikeouts and giving up one run.
