Gray Takes a 2-1 Lead in the Scarlet and Gray Baseball World Series – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Gray team rallied with a six-run seventh inning to defeat the Scarlet, 6-4 in game three of the 2001 Scarlet and Gray World Series. With the win, the Gray squad takes a 2-1 edge in the series.
The Scarlet team took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Lance Rolston (Jr., Athens, Ohio) led off with a single and moved to second on a throwing error by Gray starting pitcher Chris Hanners (Fr., Groveport, Ohio). Two batters later, he scored on a triple by Brett Garrard (So., Brownsburg, Ind.). Paul Farinacci (Fr., Westlake Village, Calif.) followed with a walk. Two batters later, Garrard scored on a groundout by Brian Panke (Fr., Jenks, Okla.). Mike Rabin (West Chester, Ohio) brought in the final run of the inning with a double to plate Farinacci.
In the top of the seventh inning, took a 6-3 lead. The key play of the inning was a three run home run by Doug Larason (So., Alexandria, Ohio) to break a 3-all tie.
Both starting pitchers did not factor into the decision. Scarlet starting pitcher Scott Lewis (Washington Court House, Ohio), a 33rd round selection by the Anaheim Angels in last June’s Major League Draft, went six shutout innings, gave up four hits and recorded five strikeouts. Hanners went five innings, gave up four hits, three runs, walked four and recorded two strikeouts for the Gray.
Scarlet reliever Jason Bullens (Jr., Dayton, Ohio) took the loss. He pitched the seventh inning, gave up two hits, six runs (one earned) walked two and recorded one strikeout.
Gray’s Kyle Blachuta (So., Bloomdale, Ohio) recorded the final out to pick up the save. The series continues tomorrow at 3 p.m.
