Five Buckeyes Named to the All-Big Ten Baseball Team and Swisher Named the Freshman of the Year – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Big Ten Conference announced today that five student-athletes on the Ohio State baseball team have been named to the 2000 all-conference team. Second baseman Chad Ehrnsberger (Jr., Kalida, Ohio) and rightfielder Jason Turner (Sr., Versailles, Ohio) garnered first-team honors. Pitcher E.J. Laratta (Jr., Englewood, Colo.) was named to the second-team and relief pitcher Cory Cox (Jr., Chillicothe, Ohio) and first baseman Nick Swisher (Fr., Parkersburg, W.Va.) earned third-team honors. Swisher was also named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
“I’m happy that all of them were able to be recognized for their efforts,” Ohio State head coach Bob Todd said. “Seeing Chad (Ehrnsberger) repeat as a first-team selection is a great accomplishment and Jason (Turner) established himself as one of the best players in our league this season.
“It also great that the coaches around the league recognized Nick’s (Swisher) talents. He’s a good young player that certainly has a lot of potential. His best days are still to come.”
Ehrnsberger is one-of-two repeat selections on the first-team (Northwestern’s Jeremy Kurella). Swisher’s selection as the Freshman of the Year marks the second-consecutive year a Buckeye has earned the honor. Laratta took home the award last year.
