COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (34-20 overall, 14-12 in the Big Ten) outlasted the Michigan State Spartans (19-35 overall, 8-17 in the Big Ten), 2-1, in a 12-inning marathon in game one of a doubleheader. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning, Lance Rolston (Fr., Athens, Ohio) drove in the winning run on a grounder to the second baseman to even the four-game series at 1-1. Starting pitcher Kevin Goodrum (Jr., Mentor, Ohio) did not factor in the decision, but was spectacular going 10 innings, throwing 108 pitches and giving up one unearned run. Stopper Cory Cox (Jr., Chillicothe, Ohio) pitched two shutout innings to improve to 4-2.
In the top of the fourth inning, MSU took a 1-0 lead. Ted Demetral reached base on a single and moved into scoring position when Goodrum over threw first base on a failed pick-off attempt. Two batters later, Don Watchowski drove in Michigan State’s only run of the ballgame with a single.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ohio State took advantage of a couple of mistakes by Michigan State. With one out, Nick Swisher (Fr., Parkersburg, W.Va.) reached base on a fielding error by MSU shortstop Charlie Braun. Jason Turner (Sr., Versailles, Ohio) immediately followed with a single to centerfield. On the play, MSU centerfielder Bob Malek misplayed the bounce and allowed the ball to roll to the outfield wall. The error enabled Swisher to score and tie the game at one.
In the bottom half of the 12th inning, Swisher led off with a single to right field. He quickly moved to second on a bloop single by Turner to shallow right field that just got past the glove of MSU second baseman Demetral. Doug Dendinger (So., Greenwich, Ohio) then loaded the bases on an infield single off the glove of MSU relief pitcher Dylan Putnam. Rolston then proceeded to drive in Swisher to win the game.
Goodrum (5-4) gave up two hits and recorded six strikeouts. For the Spartans, Zsigo went 10.1 innings, gave up four hits, one unearned run, walked two and struck out five. He did not factor into the decision.
