Baseball Loses, 6-5, and Split a Doubleheader With Michigan State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The Ohio State baseball team (34-21 overall, 14-13 in the Big Ten) lost the backend of a doubleheader to the Michigan State Spartans (20-35 overall, 9-17 in the Big Ten), 6-5, in front of 3,175 at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes split the doubleheader and fall to 1-2 in the four-game series.%^$
%^$In the top of the first inning, MSU took a 3-0 lead. Mike Pisani had a one-run single and Rick Court added a two-run single to give the Spartans the first lead of the ballgame.%^$
%^$In the top of the third inning, Pisani increased the Michigan State lead to 4-0 with a solo home run off OSU starting pitcher Greg Prenger (Fr., Harpster, Ohio).%^$
%^$The Buckeyes cut the MSU lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Swisher (Fr., Parkersburg, W.Va.) led off with a double and advanced to third on a fielding error by MSU rightfielder Pisani. Jason Turner (Sr., Versailles, Ohio) then drilled a 0-1 offering from MSU starting pitcher Scott Brandell off the right field scoreboard to cut the MSU lead to 4-2. Doug Dendinger (So., Greenwich, Ohio) kept the offensive sticks going with a single to right field. Two batters later, he scored on a single by Lance Rolston (Fr., Athens, Ohio) to cut the MSU lead to 4-3.%^$
%^$In the top of the sixth inning, Michigan State added two runs to its lead when Matt Braun hit a two-out, two-run single. In the bottom half of the inning, the Buckeyes went back on the attack and cut the MSU lead to 6-5. Trent McIlvain (Jr., Louisville, Ohio) led off with a single and advanced to second base on a fielding error by MSU leftfielder Brett Wattles. Jason Driscoll (Sr., Middlefield, Ohio) quickly moved McIlvain to third base with a single. Mike Check (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio) then drove in McIlvain when he grounded a ball to Brandell who elected to throw out Driscoll at second base. Swisher then drove in Check with a double down the left field line to give OSU its second run of the inning.%^$
%^$Prenger (4-3) took the loss. He went 5.2 innings, gave up 10 hits, six earned runs and struck out one. Reliever Kyle Brown (Fr., Washington Court House, Ohio) pitched 1.1 innings and gave up one hit. Scott Brandell got the win for the Spartans and Domanick Squires picked up his second save of the season.%^$
%^$Tomorrow, the two teams play the series finale at 1:05 p.m. in Bill Davis Stadium.
