Baseball Loses Aggie Continental Airlines Classic Finale to Texas A&M, 2-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Stellar performances from pitchers Greg Prenger (Fr., Harpster, Ohio) and Cory Cox (Jr., Chillicothe, Ohio) weren’t enough as the Ohio State baseball team (12-6 overall) lost the final game of the Aggie Continental Airlines Classic to Texas A&M (14-15 overall), 2-1. OSU finished the tournament in third place with a 3-3 record.%^$
%^$In his first career start, Prenger (0-1) went six innings, threw 86 pitches, gave up two runs and struck out three. Cox was his usual self in relief with an inning of shutout work.%^$
%^$”Both Greg and Cory made good pitches when they needed to and gave us an opportunity to win this ballgame,” head coach Bob Todd said. “We can’t ask for anything more out of our pitching staff. But we fell short swinging the bats and that was the difference.”%^$
%^$Texas A&M took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Jeff Freeman singled to score Chris Russ to give the Aggies the first lead of the game.%^$
%^$The Aggies added another run in the top of the fourth inning. Ryan Wardinsky led off with a single and scored two batters later on a single by Joe O’Jibway.%^$
%^$In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Buckeyes cut the Aggie lead in half. Joe Wilkins (So., Grove City, Ohio) led off with a walk. He then moved to second base on a ground out by Doug Dendinger (So., Greenwich, Ohio). Trent McIlvain (Jr., Louisville, Ohio) immediately singled to right-centerfield to score Wilkins and cut the Aggie lead to 2-1. McIlvain finished the tournament with a .333 batting average and six runs batted in.%^$
%^$At the conclusion of the game, Jason Turner (Sr., Versailles, Ohio), Chad Ehrnsberger (Jr., Kalida, Ohio) and McIlvain were named to the all-tournament team.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes will travel to Homestead, Fla., for the Homestead Challenge. On Wednesday, OSU plays Florida International at 6 p.m.
