COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Less than 12 hours after leaving Olsen Field last night, the Ohio State baseball team (12-5) returned for an early morning game against Central Michigan (11-5). Even with the contribution of a solid pitching performance from Kevin Wynk (Fr., Coldwater, Ohio) in his first career start, OSU lost to the Chippewas, 3-2 at the Aggie Continental Airlines Classic.
“Kevin Wynk pitched a great ballgame for us today,” head coach Bob Todd said. “But our offense never got untracked.”
The Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Nick Swisher (Fr., Parkersburg, W.Va.) led off and reached base on a fielding error by CMU first baseman Mike Gates. Three batters later Trent McIlvain (Jr., Louisville, Ohio) continued his hot hitting with a two out double to the leftfield alley to score Swisher.
With two outs in the top of the third inning, OSU added another run. On a 1-2 offering from CMU starting pitcher Dan Schell, Chad Ehrnsberger (Jr., Kalida, Ohio) hammered a ball approximately 425 feet over the centerfield wall for his sixth home run of the year. The solo blast gave OSU a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the third, CMU rallied to take a 3-2 lead. A single by Scott Pieratt scored Jason Helps and a two out double by Mike Galloway scored Bryan Scheurer and Pieratt to give CMU its first lead of the afternoon. The three run rally proved enough as CMU won the game 3-2.
Wynk pitched with the poise of a veteran in his first career start. The lefty (1-1) pitched a complete game, threw 72 pitches, gave up five hits, three runs and walked one. Schell improved to 2-0 on the year with a complete game, seven strikeout performance. With the loss, OSU falls to second place in the Aggie Continental Airlines Classic with a 3-2 record.
Tonight, the Buckeyes play their final game of the Aggie Continental Airlines Classic against Texas A&M at 9 p.m.
