COLUMBUS, Ohio – Down 2-0 in the best-of-five Scarlet and Gray World Series, the Gray Buckeyes responded with an offensive outburst to defeat the Scarlet, 18-0, at Bill Davis Stadium. Gray starting pitcher Kevin Wynk (So., Coldwater, Ohio) was magnificent. He went six innings, gave up just one hit and recorded six strikeouts to earn the win. Designated hitter Terry Pettorini (Fr., Wooster, Ohio) paced the offense by going 2-for-2 with four runs batted in. The win cuts the Scarlet lead to 2-1 in the series.
“We knew going into this game that we were a better team than what we showed in the first two games,” Wynk said. “We wanted to send a message to the other dugout and I think we did. This was a solid win for our team. Everyone contributed and we’ll be ready to go tomorrow. “
In the bottom half of the first inning, the Gray used five hits and three Scarlet errors to jump to a 7-0 lead. Todd Calcamuggio (Sr., Toledo, Ohio) and Doug Larason (Fr., Alexandria, Ohio) contributed with RBI singles, Lance Rolston (So., Athens, Ohio) walked with the bases loaded and Pettorini drove in a pair with a single to lead the charge.
The Gray kept pouring it on in the bottom of the second inning. Rolston added another RBI with a single, Pettorini drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Trent McIlvain (Sr., Louisville, Ohio) belted the first offering from Scarlet starting pitcher Josh Newman (Fr., Wheelersburg, Ohio) over the left field wall for a two-run home run. The Gray ended the inning with a 12-0 lead.
The Gray squad added two more runs in the third inning, three in the fifth inning and a run in the sixth inning.
Newman took the loss. He went two innings, gave up 11 hits, 12 runs, 9 earned runs and struck out one.
On Thursday, the Scarlet and Gray World Series continues with game four at 3 p.m.
