The Scarlet Continues its Dominance over the Gray – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The Scarlet and Gray World Series is turning into a one-sided battle. For the second consecutive afternoon, the Scarlet team received a top notch pitching performance and a flurry of offense to defeat the Gray, 8-3. Scarlet starting pitcher Greg Prenger (So., Harpster, Ohio) was in midseason form going six innings, allowing just two runs and striking out three. Doug Dendinger (Jr., Greenwich, Ohio) and Steve Caravati (Fr., Dover, Ohio) led the offense with a pair of solo home runs. The Scarlet now has a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.%^$
%^$”This team is focused,” Prenger said. “They gave me a 3-0 lead and kept pouring it on from there. We are one win away from winning the Scarlet and Gray World Series. You better believe we’ll be fired up to play tomorrow.”%^$
%^$The Scarlet took a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Mike Harris (Sr., Hillsborough, N.C.) led off with a walk and then advanced to second base on a single by Brett Garrard (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind.). One batter later, Harris scored when Nick Swisher (So., Parkersburgh, W.Va.) reached base on a fielding error by Gray second baseman Terry Pettorini (Fr., Wooster, Ohio). Two batters later, Josh Newman (Fr., Wheelersburg, Ohio) banged a double to right-center field to score Garrard and Swisher and give the Scarlet the early lead.%^$
%^$The Scarlet added another run in the second when Harris scored from third base on a wild pitch by Gray starting pitcher Brandon Steen (Jr., Hendersonville, Tenn.). Steen took the loss for the Gray. He went five innings, gave up six earned runs, and recorded six strikeouts.%^$
%^$In the top of the third inning, the Gray cut the deficit to 4-2. Lance Rolston (So., Athens, Ohio) drove in a run with a RBI single and John Mayor (Sr., Chesterfield, Mo.) accounted for the other run with a sacrifice fly to give the Gray its first two runs of the ballgame. But the Scarlet machine kept cranking in the bottom half of the inning. Dendinger blasted a 1-1 offering from Steen over the center field wall. Two batters later, Caravati belted his first home run of the series over the right field wall to increase the Scarlet lead to 6-2.%^$
%^$In the bottom of the fourth inning, Swisher scored on a two out single by Newman to increase the lead to 7-2.%^$
%^$In the seventh inning, the two teams exchanged runs. For the Gray, Doug Deeds (Fr., Bexley, Ohio) hammered a solo home run to cut the lead, 7-3. But the Scarlet responded again in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Jeff Buchanan (Fr., Camarillo, Calif.) drilled a double to score Newman and increase the Scarlet lead to 8-3.%^$
%^$Tomorrow, game three of the Scarlet and Gray World Series begins at 6:30 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium. Admission is free.
