COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes made it look easy against Ashland University Wednesday night defeating the Eagles 16-1. It was the Buckeyes 12th consecutive victory and raised their record to 19-6 (4-0 Big Ten). Ashland dropped to 22-7. Every OSU starter had a hit through the first three innings and the Buckeyes finished with 23 hits.
Freshman pitcher Brandon Steen (Fr, Hendersonville, TN) sparkled in the first starting assignment of his college career. He made quick work of Ashland throwing four scoreless innings and giving up only two hits while striking out one and walking two.
After holding Ashland scoreless in the top of the first, Ohio State put four runs on the board in the bottom-half of the inning. Tom Durant (Sr, Columbus) started things off for the Buckeyes with a one-out single. Jason Trott (Sr, Dublin, OH) and Chad Ehrnsberger (So, Kalida, OH) followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Jason Turner (Jr, Powell, OH) hit OSU’s fourth consecutive single to knock in Durant and Trott giving the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead. Marcello Garofalo (Jr, Columbus)drove in Ehrnsberger with his second double of the season to make the score 3-0. Joe Palazzo’s (Fr, Tucson, AZ) two-out infield single scored Turner from third for the final run of the inning.
OSU did not let up in the second. Trent Mcllvain (So, Louisville, OH) led the inning off with a triple to right-center field. Lockwood was then hit by a Jamie Detillion pitch. Durant then singled in Mcllvain to make the score 5-0. Trott followed with his second hit of the game, a double that scored Lockwood and Durant to make the score 7-0. Mark Smithberger came in to relieve Detillion after Trott’s double with nobody out in the second and three runs already on the board. He promptly walked Ehrnsberger to put runners on first and second. Turner’s bunt turned into a two-base error when Brian Guzik threw the ball away. Trott scored on the play making it 8-0. After Garofalo flied out for the first out of the inning, Jason Driscoll (Jr, Middlefield, OH) took Smithberger over the left field wall for a three-run home run, his second of the season, to make the score 11-0. The Buckeyes added yet another run in the bottom of the third on Mike Lockwood’s (Jr, Powell, OH) sixth home run of the season to go up 12-0.
OSU again added a single run to their lead in the fourth. Turner doubled into left-center field to start off the fourth. Garofalo knocked him in with his second hit of the game to put OSU up 13-0.
Kevin Goodrum (So, Mentor, OH) relieved Steen to start the fifth inning and set the Eagles down in order. Goodrum pitched a scoreless sixth, allowing only one base runner in his two innings for the victory, his third of the year.
The Buckeyes were held scoreless in the fifth, but got back into the scoring column in the sixth. Doug Dendinger (Fr, Greenwich, OH) and Palazzo singled and Mike Check (So, Bay Village, OH) doubled to score Dendinger. James Sharp (Fr, Wilmette, IL) followed with his first hit of the season, a single to knock in Palazzo. Joe Wilkins (Fr, Powell, OH) singled in Sharp to make the score 16-0 and close the scoring for OSU.
Ashland got on the board in the 9th with an infield hit by K.C. Murphy that scored Matt Roseberry.
OSU next travels to Ann Arbor to play a four-game series against Michigan starting Friday at 3:00 p.m.
