Ohio State Completes Doubleheader Sweep of Northwestern – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes recorded their 10th consecutive win, defeating the Northwestern Wildcats, 11-6 in front of 1,175 today at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes improve to 17-6 and 3-0 in the Big Ten, while the Wildcats fall to 7-12, 0-3 in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes went up, 1-0 with Matt Middleton (Sr., Conover, Ohio) notching a line drive into centerfield to score Jason Turner (Versailles, Ohio) in the bottom of the second.
In the third, Northwestern immediately tied the score after Jeremy Kurella batted in J.P. Williamson with a liner to centerfield. The Buckeyes followed with Chad Ehrnsberger (So., Kalida, Ohio) grounding to center and scoring Tom Durant (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) from second.
The Wildcats came back strong off the bat of Kris Musselman, who led off the fourth inning with a hit into right for the double. He would advance on a Wesley Robinson single and score after Todd Morgan singled to left field. The Wildcats would keep the hits coming with Williamson lining to left and scoring Robinson. Kurella walked, advancing Robinson and Morgan. With Robert Dainton singling, Morgan and Williamson scored. The Wildcats ended the inning with Standring grounding out and leading 5-2.
John Mayor (So., Chesterfield, Mo.) began Ohio States half of the fourth inning with a walk and Trent McIlvian (So., Louisville, Ohio) followed with a single. Mike Lockwood (Jr., Powell, Ohio) hit the ball back to the Northwestern pitcher Dan Padgett, who misplayed the grounder, loading the bases for Durant, who grounded out to Padgett, allowing Mayor to score. Jason Trott (Dublin, Ohio) then manufactured another OSU run with a sacrifice fly, scoring McIlvain. Ehrnsberger tied the score at five with a single to right field, scoring Lockwood.
Ohio State took the lead in its half of the fifth. Turner led off with a single. Middleton then reached on an error, followed by a Mayor single, scoring Turner. McIvain singled to right, loading the bases. Lead off hitter Lockwood drew a walk forcing home Middleton and leaving the bases loaded. Durant then lifted a fly ball to centerfield, scoring Mayor on the sacrifice hit. Ohio State ended the inning with a 8-5 lead. Northwestern would score again with Kurella scoring on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
The Buckeyes followed with Middleton doubling into right and scoring Turner. Then Mayor sacrificed to center and scoring Driscoll. The Buckeyes capped another run with McIlvain singling and bringing Middleton home for an 11-5 victory.
Ohio State and Northwestern will meet again tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium.
