COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was the first night game ever at Bill Davis Stadium and the first night game in the 115 year history of Buckeye baseball. It was cold. It was wet. But it was grand. 3631 fans packed the majestic two-year old stadium to witness a 6-4 victory over Big Ten rival Michigan. Junior pitcher Justin Fry (Munhall, Pa.) hurled his third complete game of the year, scattering eight hits and striking out 10. The Buckeyes got to Mike Hribernik early as Mike Lockwood (So., Powell, Ohio) led of the OSU first with a single to left center field and advanced to second when Mark Carek (Sr., Bowling Green, Ohio) grounded out to short. Dan Seimetz (Sr., Massillon, Ohio) and Mike Kremblas (Sr., Carroll, Ohio) both followed with walks, loading the bags for Jason Trott (Jr., Dublin, Ohio) who singled to right field, bringing in Lockwood. Seimetz scored on Jason Turner’s (So., Versailles, Ohio) sacrifice to center field, giving the Bucks a 2-0 lead.
OSU tacked on three more runs in the third inning to open up a 5-0 lead. Kremblas was hit by a pitch to open the inning and moved to second on Trott’s single to center field. Turner singled down the right field line, bringing home Kremblas and moving Trott to second. Jason Driscoll (So., Middlefield, Ohio) sacrificed to advance the two base runners and Trott came home when Lou Santangelo (Jr., Youngstown, Ohio) reached on an error by second baseman Bobby Scales. Chad Ehrnsberger (Fr., Kalida, Ohio) fouled to deep left field, bringing in Turner for the fifth run of the game. The Wolverines got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, posting two runs. Mike Cervenak led off the inning with an infield single that careened off Ehrnsberger’s glove. Derek Besco reached on an error by Ehrnsberger and both runners scored later in the inning. Michigan notched two runs in the top of the sixth to pull within one run. Bobby Scales singled to right center field and Robert Bobeda followed with a double to right center, giving UM two runners in scoring position. Mick Kalahar sacrificed Scales home and Bobeda scored on Dan Sanborn’s infield single. The Buckeyes put up a sixth run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a two-run lead. Ehrnsberger doubled to left center field and scored when Carek doubled down the right field line, putting the game away. OSU and UM will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 4:05 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium.
